As I stood on the dock in Nadi, staring at the tiny hopper plane that I was about to board, I couldn’t help but wonder if I’d made a huge mistake by coming to Fiji. The plane looked straight out of the ‘60s, and when I reluctantly entered the cockpit, my eyes nearly popped out of my head at the hundreds of buttons, dials and other thingamajigs that looked way too outdated to still be in operation. The idea of visiting a couples resort solo already had me on edge, and to top things off, I was panicking over the wifi situation, which I had learned was basically non-existent across most of the resort. Despite being in one of the most serene tropical paradises, I was consumed with stress.

Before I knew it, my plane was taking off. For the first 10 minutes, I was fully convinced that we were going to drop out of the sky. I kept my eyes closed as we ascended into the air, and even texted a few friends asking them to please take care of my dear cat Daisy if I wasn’t to return. However, once we leveled out, I was awestruck as I looked down at the Listerine-colored waters, admiring the various islands and coral gardens from above. I had never seen anything quite like this, and after a short half-hour flight, we began our descent toward Turtle Island.

As the rickety plane door slid open, I saw the magical island that awaited. Two Fijian men in traditional warrior garb literally picked me up and placed me on their shoulders, carrying me through the crystal-clear water until I was gently placed on some of the whitest sand I’d ever seen. Between the natural beauty and being physically carried around, to say that I was experiencing sensory overload would be an understatement. Then, the singing started. I looked up to find about 15 different staff members clapping and smiling from ear to ear. One by one, they greeted me with an embrace. I’m not the touchiest person, but it was a heartwarming welcome, and felt surprisingly genuine. Once I got my bearings and remembered that I was still on planet Earth, I was handed a coconut by the guest services manager, Bill Mualele, also known as Uncle Bill. He uttered two simple words: “Welcome home.”

Each Turtle Island Resort guest is given their own designated Mama or Papa—essentially a butler who takes care of your every need. I was assigned Mama Lo, a soft-spoken Fijian woman with a gentle aura and patient demeanor. After a quick lunch on the beach, Mama Lo led me to my bure, and I was shocked upon seeing its size. For two people, let alone one, these beachfront villas are absolutely massive. Most of the 14 bures feature a separate living area complete with a customizable mini fridge. In the bedroom portion, you’ll find an indoor hot tub that sits opposite the spacious walk-in shower. Every day, your bure is adorned in fresh hibiscus flowers and palm leaf decor, and your mini fridge gets refilled exactly to your liking. I became an absolute fanatic for soursop juice, a creamy and sweet nectar made from the pulp of the soursop fruit—it’s also a great mixer for rum. By the end of the trip, I was going through almost an entire bottle a day.

My first couple of days at Turtle Island consisted of snorkeling just off the hotel’s main beach, where I saw everything from bright blue starfish and giant clams to stunning (yet startling) sea snakes, and getting my lay of the land. The entire experience is all-inclusive, from premium alcohol and meals to daily experiences and activities, with rates starting around $2,000 per night. Every other day, each couple is provided with a private beach where they can enjoy a picnic on the wide stretches of sand without any prying eyes, proving to be one of the hotel’s most unique highlights. Though Turtle Island Resort typically doesn’t allow solo travelers, I was made an exception as a journalist, and I must say, having an entire Fijian beach to myself was both thrilling and surreal.

In the evenings, guests can choose between private dinners on floating pontoons or picturesque cliffsides, but the property also encourages plenty of communal dining. During our first happy hour, I was introduced to several different couples—some were newlyweds on their honeymoon, others were celebrating milestone anniversaries. And then, there was me. Despite the fact that I travel solo often, I would be lying if I didn’t say that the first two nights of the trip were intimidating. I wasn’t sure how the other couples would feel about my presence, and I had a heightened awareness that my odd number was throwing off the dinner seating each night. However, on the third day of my trip, I quickly learned that Turtle Island is about far more than romance.

Though this legendary resort, which has hosted (now former) couples including Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey, Tommy Lee and Pamela Anderson and Britney Spears and Kevin Federline, is best known as a honeymoon destination, the staff go above and beyond to ensure that you leave with a genuine understanding of their local culture. Every Wednesday is “Fijian Day,” and while you’re welcome to build your own itinerary, I suggest following their lead.

Fijian Day kicks off with the usual breakfast, which can be enjoyed on your private daybed or on the beach with the other guests, just before the staff take you out on a boat to one of the nearby villages in the Yasawa Islands. Once we arrived, we realized that low tide had prevented us from reaching the beach, and we had to roll up our pants and wade through the shallow water until we reached the sand, passing local fishermen who chuckled at our caution and lack of balance. We then hiked up a short hill and found a small school waiting at the top. We were instructed to sit on benches under a tree, and before we knew it, rows of children lined up in front of us, all sporting curious smiles as they whispered and stared.

The kids sang us a few songs, and a few of the older couples were tearing up. Their voices were harmonious, and their enthusiasm was inspiring. At the end of their performance, the children formed a line, shook our hands and thanked us for coming. Our guide, Erami, then took us deeper into the village, where we watched him conduct a sevusevu—a welcoming ceremony where kava is presented to the local chief as a “thank you” for letting us into his community—before leading us to a building where we could buy various souvenirs and trinkets. On the boat ride back to the resort, I found myself talking more to the other guests as we excitedly shared how touching the experience was, and finally, I was feeling less like a random journalist on a couples retreat.

Immediately upon returning to Turtle Island, we sat down for a Fijian seafood lunch. This buffet-style feast featured everything from ceviche-like Kokoda (Fiji’s national dish) to huge bowls of octopus salad and marinated shrimp. As a seafood lover, I was in heaven. Later that evening, all of us gathered under the baka tree for a traditional Meke ceremony with the staff. It was a joy to watch my Mama Lo get lost in her indigenous method of storytelling, moving like water as she sang and danced. But it wasn’t just the Mamas and Papas that performed—it was the entire crew, from the snorkel guides and housekeepers to the cooks and massage therapists. They radiated joy and comfort, and when they asked us to get up and dance with them, not a single guest declined. We let loose, laughing, chanting and singing together. For dinner, the traditions continued with a Lovo dinner. Erami explained the importance of this underground-style of cooking, where hot coals are used to grill various meats that are wrapped in banana leaf over the course of several hours. I opted for the lobster, and we all dined with our toes in the sand, watching the massive fruit bats fly overhead as the gentle waves lapped along the quiet shore.

After two nights of turning down Turtle Island’s ritual kava ceremony, which takes place with the staff every evening except on Sundays, I finally decided to partake. After the day we’d just had, how could I not? One of the most unique parts of this experience is the fact that guests are encouraged to interact with the team, breaking down the walls and barriers between guest and employee. I sat with Mama Lo, requesting a “low tide” pour as I got used to the earthy taste of kava. Though it wasn’t the most pleasant thing I’ve ever consumed, it wasn’t that bad. Supposedly, kava can have a hallucinogenic effect if enough is consumed, but I never felt more than a numb tongue. Regardless, watching the hard-working employees chat, cackle and unwind after a day of creating heaven on earth for us guests, is what gave me a true high.

In an age where luxury travel can (sometimes rightfully) come under fire for elitism and exploitation, Turtle Island stands as a beacon of hope for what could be. From its sustainably focused solar-powered farm and water conservation efforts, this eco-resort proves its commitment to caring for the land it loves while providing a five-star experience for travelers. Perhaps most importantly, sharing Fijian culture is prioritized, standing strong amidst globalization and reminding its guests that there is power and pleasure in simplicity. Although I would certainly love to return for a future elopement, having the rare opportunity to visit alone removed the romantic distraction, providing a clear vision of what makes this island so special. While you’ll certainly enjoy the private beaches, world-class snorkeling, gourmet dining and endlessly flowing fruity cocktails, it is the embrace of local culture that leaves a lasting impact. Turtle Island refuses to let you be a tourist; rather, it makes you a member of its ever-growing family.

L.A.’s January Restaurant Openings Set the Tone for 2026 https://observer.com/list/best-new-los-angeles-restaurants-january-2026/ Tue, 13 Jan 2026 16:37:33 +0000 https://observer.com/?post_type=listicle&p=1610256 January is a month of fresh starts and new beginnings, so what better way to kick off 2026 than with a few can’t-miss restaurant openings? As Los Angeles prepares for the year ahead, the city is off to a strong start, adding a few new culinary gems to its ever-growing list of premier dining destinations.

Before moving on to the new year, though, we can’t forget the gifts that December bestowed upon us. Hermon’s made waves at the end of the year with its innovative American fare and tiny ‘tini’s, quickly becoming one of the city’s most difficult reservations to make. Echo Park’s Henrietta also opened its doors for lunch and dinner, while Régalade set out to redefine what French fare means to Angelenos on West 3rd Street. DTLA’s The Row welcomed Kar Son, a sleek Chinese eatery that appreciates tradition.

This month, Matū is bringing its iconic cheesesteak sandwiches to Pasadena, and the recently revamped Cameo Beverly Hills is opening a chic, Peruvian-Japanese Nikkei restaurant called Zampo. Following the opening of her trendy diner, Max & Helen’s, chef Nancy Silverton is staying busy with the launch of Korean-Italian Lapaba, and the former Amour space on Beverly Boulevard has officially been replaced with a sultry new lounge called Scarlett. From Koreatown to West Hollywood, these are the best L.A. restaurants opening in January.

The Most Noteworthy L.A. Restaurant Openings for January

Lapaba

  • 558 S Western Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90020

Chef Nancy Silverton has partnered with Tanya and Joe Bastianich and Robert Kim to open Lapaba in the heart of Koreatown by the end of January. This innovative pasta bar puts a Korean twist on Italian classics, and if you’re looking to enjoy dinner and a show, you’ll love watching the chef craft handmade noodles in the dedicated pasta room. The chic and modern space will feature an open kitchen along with plenty of custom furnishings created by Costa in Italy. Although you can explore a creative selection of appetizers and desserts, pasta is the star of the show, with menu highlights including the tonnarelli with clams, chorizo and braised kombu, and the cacio e pepe dduk.

Cheesesteaks by Matū

  • 625 E. Colorado Boulevard, Pasadena, CA 91101

As you probably guessed, this Pasadena opening specializes in Philly’s most famous sandwich. Cheesesteaks by Matū is dedicated to serving the restaurant’s beloved lunch special all day long, ensuring that you can cure your craving for this coveted sandwich whenever it strikes. Available for dine-in and to-go starting January 14, patrons can build their own cheesesteak or stick with Matū’s signature recipe. Whether you keep things classic or choose to customize, every order is made with eight ounces of grass-fed Wagyu ribeye and sirloin from First Light Farms and a fresh-baked sesame roll. Round out your meal with a side of house-made, tallow-fried potato chips and an ice-cold Lagunitas.

Scarlett

  • 8715 Beverly Blvd, West Hollywood, CA 90048

After a rough go with the closures of Amour Weho and Stella, this underrated strip of Beverly Boulevard is being revitalized with the launch of Scarlett. Coined as an Italian-Californian lounge, Scarlett offers live musical performances, a cozy courtyard and a leopard-print pool table to create a fun and upbeat ambiance that is draped in elegance. When it comes to food, think Italian classics like pasta, calamari, meatballs and chicken parm. You’ll also find lighter, more coastal California-inspired dishes like tuna tartare, shrimp cocktail and chips and caviar dip. End your evening on a sweet note with an espresso martini and the parfait-style tiramisu.

Zampo

  • 1224 Beverwil Dr, Los Angeles, CA 90035

Located at the newly rebranded Cameo Beverly Hills, LXR Hotels & Resorts, Zampo is a Peruvian-Japanese Nikkei restaurant set to open on Tuesday, January 27. Each dish tells a story of two cultures by infusing Japanese flavors into traditional Peruvian recipes, and you can expect the plates to be as stunning as the design-forward setting, which boasts a mid-century modern edge with minimalist undertones. From fresh ceviches to aromatic soups, the menu is diverse and exciting. The charred octopus is expected to be a popular entrée, as is the plancha-seared salmon and the tender lomo saltado.

Where to Dine in Malibu, From Coastal Classics to New Arrivals https://observer.com/list/malibu-california-best-restaurants/ Fri, 09 Jan 2026 14:00:00 +0000 https://observer.com/?post_type=listicle&p=1609153 Removed from the hustle and bustle of the city of Los Angeles, Malibu is a beachside oasis for those seeking a slower routine in L.A. County. Although this Southern California locale has long been a hotspot for tourism, most people visit for the sandy beaches, killer surf, premier hiking and regular celebrity sightings; however, the ever-growing culinary scene remains relatively under the radar.

While world-renowned spots like Nobu garner widespread attention and remain nearly impossible to book a reservation at, most Malibu restaurants maintain laid-back vibes, encouraging a “come as you are” ethos. In addition to shack-style seafood restaurants like Malibu Seafood and Neptune’s Net, there are also plenty of upscale eateries where sweeping ocean views meet attentive service and elegant entrées.

Following the devastating Palisades Fire of January 2025, many Malibu businesses suffered immeasurable loss, with others feeling the fallout from the road closures and nearby destruction. Today, the city continues to move forward, but external support is more important than ever.

Though many of Malibu’s most popular restaurants have been around for decades, newcomers like Clark’s Oyster Bar prove that this resilient beach town is just getting started. From an old-school steakhouse with ice-cold martinis to a casual counter-ordering cafe that serves one of L.A.’s most delicious lobster rolls, we’ve rounded up the very best restaurants in Malibu.

Lucky’s Malibu

  • 3835 Cross Creek Rd Suite #18, Malibu, CA 90265

Unlike the majority of Malibu’s laid-back, beachy eateries, Lucky’s is an upscale steakhouse with an elegant ambiance. Bistro-style tables adorned with stark white tablecloths extend from the main dining room to the covered patio, and waiters in traditional white button-downs and black slacks provide attentive service. The massive martinis are shaken tableside and served ice-cold, but they also offer a solid selection of wine by both the glass and bottle. The filet mignon is so tender it almost melts in your mouth, and when it comes to appetizers, start with the creamy macaroni and cheese, whole steamed artichoke and Stephen’s tuna tartare.

Broad Street Oyster Co.

  • 23359 Pacific Coast Hwy #3874A, Malibu, CA 90265

Casual counter-ordering, canned wines and a covered patio are all you need at Malibu’s Broad Street Oyster Co. Though they’re best known for their buttery lobster rolls, which can be topped with everything from caviar to fresh Santa Barbara uni, you can also order shareable starters like raw oysters, ceviche and an ever-changing daily crudo. Other highlights include the stone crab claws, Baja fish tacos and one-of-a-kind caviar hot dog. Though you can enjoy an afternoon on their outdoor patio, you can also order to-go for the ultimate beachside picnic.

Clark’s Oyster Bar

  • 23465 Civic Center Way, Malibu, CA 90265

One of L.A.’s most exciting restaurant openings of 2025, Clark’s Oyster Bar is an Austin, Texas, transplant known for its goat cheese-olive martinis and seafood-focused menu. The sleek yet cozy interior features a mounted marlin above a warm fireplace, and in true Clark’s fashion, there is a small aquarium with colorful fish near the entrance. There’s always a fun selection of briny oysters to explore, but for the optimal experience, order them pre-dressed with honey vinaigrette, mint, cucumber and a pile of crispy shallots. The crudo plate is a can’t-miss appetizer that features four different types of fish, but the pan-seared scallops in garlic and herb butter make for the ideal entrée. Don’t forget to order a side of the thinnest and crispiest shoestring fries you’ll ever find.

Taverna Tony

  • 23410 Civic Center Way, Malibu, CA 90265

A Greek hideaway in the middle of Malibu, Taverna Tony serves Mediterranean fare in a stylish, Santorini-inspired setting. On weekends, the restaurant comes to life with live music, DJ sets and the occasional belly dancer, creating an upbeat ambiance meant to mimic the spirited energy of Greece. Kick off your meal with the slightly dirty Lil Zeus martini, complete with feta-stuffed olives, while nibbling on a variety of dips and grilled calamari. The grilled seafood ranges from a whole branzino to jumbo prawns, but other highlights include the grilled quail and braised lamb shank.

Nobu Malibu

  • 22706 Pacific Coast Hwy, Malibu, CA 90265

One of the most scenic Nobu restaurants in the world, Nobu Malibu is a beachfront icon that continues to play host to L.A.’s A-list crowd. From Justin Bieber to Mariah Carey, celebrity sightings are a regular occurrence and can be expected almost every day of the week. Though the food remains consistent, with favorites like chef Nobu’s Wagyu tacos, yellowtail sashimi and miso black cod, it’s the sweeping ocean views and serene setting that cause this location to stand out. Enjoy the sound of lapping waves while sipping on a fruity lychee martini alongside fresh nigiri and crispy king crab tempura.

Neptune’s Net

  • 42505 CA-1, Malibu, CA 90265

Between its oceanfront atmosphere and biker bar vibes, Neptune’s Net is a can’t-miss stop for seafood lovers embarking on a road trip up Pacific Coast Highway. There are two different ordering areas in the mostly outdoor restaurant: one for fresh seafood like crab and oysters, and one for fried seafood. Start with fresh crab legs and hot drawn butter while sipping on an IPA or bloody Mary before diving into a fried scallop or shrimp basket. If you see an open table when you arrive, grab it before ordering, as spots fill up fast with locals and bikers looking to chow down while admiring the Pacific Ocean views across the street.

Geoffrey’s

  • 27400 Pacific Coast Hwy, Malibu, CA 90265

Geoffrey’s is a long-time classic situated on the edge of a panoramic bluff on PCH. From Oprah Winfrey to Halle Berry, several celebrities have made this romantic restaurant their go-to dinner spot in Malibu, but Geoffrey’s is also open for lunch and a Benedict-focused weekend brunch. Though the menu is seafood-heavy, you can explore entrées like glazed duck, Australian Wagyu and vegetarian-friendly options like the glazed tofu with mushrooms. Order the famous coconut shrimp, spicy fried oysters and tuna tartare as shareable starters before enjoying the best of both worlds with the surf and turf as your main.

Malibu Seafood

  • 25653 CA-1, Malibu, CA 90265

An iconic seafood shack right across the way from Corral Beach, Malibu Seafood is a local gem that serves no-frills food in a sunny, seaside setting. Though most patrons come for a lobster roll or fried shrimp platter, Malibu Seafood doubles as a market where you can buy fresh fish like ahi tuna, Alaskan halibut, mahi mahi and much more. In addition to classic seafood shack delicacies, like fried oysters and steamed clams, this roadside staple serves unique creations such as the squid steak sandwich and cheese-topped fried scallop sandwich on a brioche bun.

Mastro’s Ocean Club

  • 18412 Pacific Coast Hwy, Malibu, CA 90265

Following a five-month closure due to the Palisades Fire, Mastro’s Ocean Club reopened in June 2025, reviving its elegant service and timeless surf and turf fare by the sea. The old-school, swanky setting features floor-to-ceiling windows that offer uninterrupted views of the Topanga State Beach shoreline, creating the perfect backdrop for an opulent shellfish and an accompanying martini. While you can’t go wrong with any of the steaks, we recommend a classic filet alongside lobster mac and cheese, garlic truffle cauliflower and the crispy garlic big eye tuna sashimi.

Cafe Habana

  • 3939 Cross Creek Rd, Malibu, CA 90265

Cafe Habana combines Cuban and Mexican cuisine across a vibrant menu of burritos, tacos, salads and tasty sides. The indoor dining rooms feature moody, candlelit tables surrounded by black and white photographs, creating a sort of “cigar lounge” ambiance. Outside, however, lush foliage and greenery complement a breezy patio setting, marking the perfect place for a Casamigos margarita, which is available in fresh flavors like cilantro and cucumber or prickly pear. The breakfast burritos are a local favorite, but other highlights include the Mexican-style grilled corn, the taco salad and the flavorful yellow rice.

Where to Find the Best Booze-Free Drinks in Los Angeles https://observer.com/list/best-mocktails-non-alcoholic-drinks-los-angeles/ Thu, 08 Jan 2026 13:30:00 +0000 https://observer.com/?post_type=listicle&p=1609409 Looking to start 2026 with a clearer mind and a happier liver? Whether you’re tackling Dry January or simply attempting to cut back on the booze, several Los Angeles restaurants and bars are helping you swap a classic cocktail for a mindful mocktail. Given all of the innovative zero-proof spirits and de-alcoholized wines, social drinking with a sober twist is easier than ever.

At three-Michelin-starred Providence, non-alcoholic beverages are paired with a multicourse, fine dining feast, proving that mocktails can possess just as much finesse and flair as the classics. Bar Benjamin maintains its eclectic approach to mixology across its mocktail menu, using modern techniques like clarification and fat-washing to play with texture and taste. For sweeping views and no-ABV sippers, head to rooftop hotspots like Dante and Lemon Grove, or enjoy a virgin take on José Andrés’ famous Salt Air Margarita at poolside Butterfly. From swanky cocktail bars to one of the city’s coolest sushi restaurants, we’ve rounded up the best places for a mocktail in Los Angeles.

Bar Benjamin

  • 7174 Melrose Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90046

One of L.A.’s most noteworthy bar openings of 2025, Bar Benjamin is a swanky cocktail lounge that puts an innovative spin on the art of mixology. Though you’ll find a mix of spirit-forward libations and savory sippers, Bar Benjamin also crafts a handful of zero-proof drinks that maintain the establishment’s signature creativity. The Taro Milk Punch is a clarified mocktail with unique undertones of cinnamon and lemongrass, while the Tepache Bird pays tribute to one of Mexico’s most popular fermented beverages. If you’re typically a fan of Bar Benjamin’s popular Last Laugh, opt for the Smiley Face, which contains all of the same savory complexity without the alcohol.

Dante Beverly Hills

  • 225 N Canon Dr, Beverly Hills, CA 90210

Perched atop the Maybourne Beverly Hills, Dante is famous for its ice-cold martinis and various Negroni renditions. However, those hoping to cut back on the booze and opt for a mocktail will find plenty of zero-proof concoctions. The NA Blood Orange Spritz tastes like summer on the Italian Riviera in every sip, while the NA Cosmojito swaps spirits for house-made cranberry juice, fresh mint, pressed lime juice and Perrier. For something more complex, bittersweet and herbaceous, order the aperitivo-inspired Crodino.

Butterfly

  • 8801 Washington Blvd, Culver City, CA 90232

Enjoy a poolside mocktail when visiting José Andrés’ Butterfly at The Shay. The Cuadratura is surprisingly spirit-forward despite the fact that it’s liquor-free, featuring a harmonious blend of Three Spirit Livener, Melati Classic and Lyres Apéritif. If you’re hoping to cure your craving for Andrés’ famous Salt Air Margarita, however, indulge in the Floating on Air, which features the same cloud-like topping of salty foam. Round all of this out with a shareable selection of ceviches and guacamole.

Melrose Umbrella Co.

  • 7465 Melrose Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90046

Melrose Umbrella Co. is a longstanding cocktail bar with a reputation for excellence. By fusing old-world classics with modern techniques, this rustic, Prohibition-style watering hole has gathered a cult following of loyal regulars. During Dry January and beyond, Melrose Umbrella Co. pulls out all of the stops to cater to imbibers of all kinds. Many of the unique mocktails contain mood-boosting adaptogens, promising a social “buzz” without the booze. Agave spirit lovers should explore the Pa-No-Ma, which combines Ritual Zero Proof Tequila with prickly pear, a green apple reduction, ruby red grapefruit, lime and bubbly soda. The Kepto Pepino is a refreshing, non-alcoholic take on a gimlet, featuring zero-proof gin, cucumber, fresh lime, monkfruit syrup and a rim of savory celery salt.

  • 1717 Vine St Floor 6, Los Angeles, CA 90028

Located on the rooftop of The Aster, Lemon Grove serves up seasonally-inspired cuisine alongside sweeping city views in Hollywood. In addition to a handful of non-alcoholic wines, there are three mocktails on the menu, each of which caters to a specific flavor profile. The Some Like It Hot mocktail is similar to a spicy margarita, while the Old Hollywood uses spiritless bourbon and aromatic spices to create a timeless sipper. The Casablanca is the final alcohol-free sipper, complete with a gin-inspired “spirit,” fresh citrus and Lyre’s zero-proof sparkling wine.

Casa Madera

  • 8440 Sunset Blvd, West Hollywood, CA 90069

Enjoy eye-catching beverages, epic city views and a modern fusion of Mediterranean and Mexican cuisine at West Hollywood’s Casa Madera. Since so much thought and creativity go into each cocktail, it only makes sense that the mocktails are equally as complex. Ardor

  • 9040 Sunset Blvd, West Hollywood, CA 90069

Kick back with a mocktail in hand in the sleek and plant-filled dining room at Ardor. Situated inside the design-forward West Hollywood Edition, Ardor focuses on veggie-forward dishes that pair wonderfully with craft cocktails and refreshing wines. However, during Dry January, guests can take their taste buds on a tantalizing journey with a few fruity mocktails. Magenta uses Lyre’s White Cane, hibiscus, lime and soda to transport you to a more tropical time, while the Seed and Sun creates a more layered profile with white cranberry, lemon and bergamot.

Providence

  • 5955 Melrose Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90038

Celebrating something special in January? Though a three-Michelin-starred meal typically calls for an elevated wine pairing, Providence offers a non-alcoholic menu to match its multi-course seafood experience. Enjoy unique concoctions ranging from the Saja Boy, made with purple shiso, raspberry, vanilla and CO2, to the Fig-Roni, which uses a zero-proof gin, aperitif and vermouth. Each cocktail is served in fine glassware that contributes to the overall sipping experience, and some creations are so elegant and flavor-forward that you’ll forget they’re alcohol-free.

Uchi

  • 9001 Santa Monica Blvd Ste 101, West Hollywood, CA 90069

Rather than pairing your sashimi and nigiri with sake, consider curating the perfect sushi spread with one of Uchi’s zero-proof cocktails. With four different mocktails to choose from, there are plenty of options for those looking to imbibe more mindfully. The Akabanna is Uchi’s take on a virgin hibiscus margarita, but for something on the drier side, order the Ritual Zero-Proof Gin-based Mitsu Mitsu. Other options include the seasonal sangria, de-alcoholized red wine and the bubbly Kirakira.

Post-Holiday Detox: Reset Your Mind, Body and Soul at These California Retreats https://observer.com/list/best-california-detox-hotels-wellness-retreats/ Mon, 05 Jan 2026 14:30:00 +0000 https://observer.com/?post_type=listicle&p=1606724 The holiday season is a cheerful time that brings loved ones together in celebration, but it is also a recipe for losing one’s routine. Between the rich foods, alcohol and sweets, many walk into January feeling burned out and overindulged, bringing remnants of holiday stress into the new year.

While wellness resorts offer a nice reprieve, some of us need a proper detox to get our minds and bodies right as we walk into 2026. In California, several resorts and retreats prioritize purification, offering guests customized schedules that focus on fitness, nutrition and mindset.

In Big Sur, Alila Ventana treats guests to panoramic views, open-air Japanese hot baths and restorative treatments at their world-class spa, while The Ranch Malibu takes a more disciplined approach to detoxification, with regimented routines and workout classes.

If you’re looking to create a more intentional relationship with food, consider a stint at The Ashram in Calabasas, where plant-based cuisine is painted in a more versatile light, or embark on a more intense journey with an all-liquid diet at the celebrity-loved We Care Spa.

From a beachfront resort on the sandy dunes of Monterey to a zen retreat near Palm Springs, we’ve rounded up the best hotels for a holiday detox in the new year.

Meals at The Sur House, where you can enjoy locally sourced produce alongside quality cuts and fresh seafood, are included in your nightly rate, but the best place to detox after the holidays is at the open-air Japanese hot baths. Inspired by a traditional onsen, these tranquil tubs invite you to admire the surrounding redwoods as you soak your worries away. There are also two heated outdoor pools where you can take a dip or swim laps before heading to the spa for the Marine Layer Detox. The stimulating treatment begins with an exfoliating dry brush and is followed by a purifying wrap that allows you to sweat out any impurities or toxins.

L.A.’s Standout Restaurant Openings of 2025 https://observer.com/list/best-new-los-angeles-restaurants-2025-openings/ Wed, 31 Dec 2025 15:30:00 +0000 https://observer.com/?post_type=listicle&p=1605287 Lauded as having one of the most diverse and distinguished culinary scenes in the world, Los Angeles continues to wow with new openings every month. Although 2025 was a particularly hard year for local restaurants, between economic struggles and the devastating January fires, business owners have displayed a special kind of resilience that proves how this city continues to reinvent itself, time and time again.

From Santa Monica to Downtown Los Angeles, the entire county welcomed new faces in 2025, many of which are hopefully here to stay. After dealing with the disappointing closure of his Koreatown restaurant, Kinn, chef Ki Kim is back and better than ever with Restaurant Ki, which managed to score its first Michelin star within a year of opening. Beverly Hills has also played host to a historic opening, with Dior launching its first restaurant outside of Paris.

Foodie Phil Rosenthal partnered with renowned L.A. chef Nancy Silverton to create a nostalgic diner that has a line out the door at all hours of the day, while chef Ray Garcia brought his former Broken Spanish restaurant back to life with a more casual iteration in Culver City.

Whether you’re looking to enjoy elegant French fare by the sea or sit down for a traditional Japanese kaiseki meal near Sawtelle, we’ve rounded up L.A.’s best restaurant openings of 2025.

Restaurant Ki

  • 111 San Pedro St, Los Angeles, CA 90012

When chef Ki Kim set out to create Restaurant Ki in January 2025, he was on a mission to share his love of Korean food through a refined and innovative lens. In its first year of opening, this hidden Downtown L.A. gem has earned a coveted Michelin star, and chef Kim himself was named Michelin’s California Young Chef Award Winner. Finding the speakeasy-style restaurant is part of the fun (but it can be a bit stressful when you’re beating L.A. traffic to make the single 6:30 p.m. seating). After parking in the public garage on San Pedro Street, find the lobby on the second floor—the garage is pretty small, so there’s not too much ground to cover. After entering through the glass doors, select the elevator button that says “Restaurant,” and a specific lift with access to the basement arrives. Press B, and you’ll have found your destination.

There are only 10 seats at the chef’s counter, giving you ample facetime with Kim and his talented team. The meal starts off with an array of snacks, including Kim’s famous crispy octopus, all plated on unique and vintage finds, many of which Kim himself has hand-collected over the years. While you never know when the menu will change, expect it to lean seafood-heavy, featuring a balance of raw and cooked dishes. Some highlights on the current iteration include a pear and duck liver mousse, a delicate raw squid and uni creation with puffed quinoa, a cozy cup of noodles with a rich crab broth and the most delicately tender grilled lobster you’ll ever have.

Broken Spanish Comedor

  • 12565 Washington Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90066

Broken Spanish Comedor brings one of chef Ray Garcia’s greatest culinary successes back to life with a more casual ethos. Located in a stylish A-frame space in Culver City, this modern Mexican eatery puts an unexpected spin on classic recipes—think chicken enchiladas made with feta cheese and a crispy flauta stuffed with smoked tuna. Most dishes are best shared, and you’ll want to start with the refried lentils with warm corn tortillas and the bay scallop tostada. The black garlic Caesar salad is another top dish, but for your main, order the Chicharron, a Broken Spanish original.

La Monique

  • 849 Ocean Ave, Santa Monica, CA 90403

In October, Santa Monica’s low-key luxury hotel Oceana welcomed a new signature restaurant called La Monique. This French brasserie features an opulent design complete with mirrored ceilings, emerald green walls and a vibrant vintage art collection. Chef David Fricaud has curated a menu that puts a contemporary twist on classic recipes, best shown in dishes like the escargot poppers and the mini French onion grilled cheeses. Start your meal with the paper-thin tuna carpaccio before enjoying the butternut squash agnolotti as a pasta course. One of La Monique’s signature entrées is the poulet frites, but we recommend the petite filet with Béarnaise and a side of pomme purée.

Baby Bistro

  • 1027 Alpine St, Los Angeles, CA 90012

An old school Victorian home in Victor Heights sets the scene for an evening at Baby Bistro. The cozy dining room is stylish yet approachable, featuring olive green walls, warm wooden booths and a window that looks out onto bright pink bougainvillea. Upon sitting down, guests are greeted with a handwritten menu with around six to eight dishes. The execution of each item is creative yet simple, showcasing premium ingredients sourced with quality in mind. Expect unique combos like octopus and wasabi leaf, and spaghetti squash with passion fruit.

Cosetta

  • 3150 Ocean Park Blvd, Santa Monica, CA 90405

Created by L.A.-native chef Zach Pollack, Cosetta puts a California twist on Italian fare in Santa Monica’s Ocean Park neighborhood. The covered patio is the perfect place to sip a tangy, tomato cordial-infused margarita, and when it comes to food, you’ll want to explore each section of the menu. Start with the tender scallop crudo and bluefin tuna tartare before indulging in the house-baked bread with French butter, smoked mozzarella sticks and the Italian dumpling salad. For mains, you can’t go wrong with one of Pollack’s signature puffy-crust pizzas, but crispy chicken milanesi with buttered beans also wows.

Cosetta Courtesy of Shelby Moore

Galerie

  • 8226 Sunset Blvd, West Hollywood, CA 90046

One of West Hollywood’s best openings of the year, Galerie manages to be trendy yet timeless all at the same time. The classic checkered floor pays tribute to the supper clubs of L.A.’s past, but you’ll also find plenty of red, jazzy accents that reflect the soul of the Sunset Strip. The house chips with whipped onion crème fraîche and spicy bluefin tuna tostadas are two can’t-miss starters, but crunchy cucumber Caesar with sourdough breadcrumbs and crispy leeks was one of my favorite bites of the entire year. Enjoy the creamy lumache pasta or Gruyère-topped burger as your main before finishing with the Basque cheesecake for dessert.

Wilde’s

  • 1850 Hillhurst Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90027

Located in Los Feliz, Wilde’s is a women-run restaurant that specializes in British comfort food. Owned and operated by friends Tatiana Ettensberger and chef Natasha Price, Wilde’s brings English classics to life with farm-fresh and seasonal California produce. The meat pie for two is a signature highlight, but other favorites include the duck breast and winter squash, bangers and mash, Welsh rarebit and battered skate. The menu is small and approachable, so you should be able to save room for the sticky toffee pudding for dessert.

Maydan Market

  • 4301 W Jefferson Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90016

Maydan Market acts as a third space for dining and drinking in West Adams. It’s equal parts elegant food hall, market and sit-down restaurant, meaning every visitor can quickly find their niche. For a full spread complete with cocktails and dedicated service, head to namesake Maydan for Middle Eastern fare, open-fire cooking and shareable kabobs. Yhing Yhang BBQ is a more casual spot with counter seating, but the six-course tasting menu is a great way to experience the unique Thai flavors and dishes to their full extent. Round out your meal with a cocktail from Compass Rose and you’ll be set.

Maydan Market Maydan Market

Casa Dani

  • 10268 Santa Monica Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90067

Though the original Casa Dani in New York is no longer, Sbe’s Sam Nazarian has partnered with chef Dani García to bring this Spanish-Mediterranean concept to Los Angeles. Located in the Westfield Century City Mall, Casa Dani shares a 17,000-square-foot space with neighboring Katsuya. Start with classic tapas like the Ibérico ham croquettes and fried shrimp before exploring the raw tuna section of the menu—for a simple and refined preparation, order the akami porterhouse carpaccio. When it comes to mains, you can’t go wrong with any of the paellas, but for an ultra-rich take on Spain’s most famous dish, try the bone marrow and Wagyu paella.

Betsy

  • 75 E Mariposa St, Altadena, CA 91001

In addition to being one of L.A.’s best openings of 2025, Betsy also served as a hallmark of hope following the devastating Eaton Fire in January 2025. The focus is on hearth cooking, and the atmosphere is cozy, homey and everything you’d want in a small neighborhood joint. The menu changes regularly, but you can always anticipate locally-sourced produce and meats that are seasoned beautifully with a clean ethos. The wine list also rotates, ensuring that even the most loyal of regulars can try something new during each dine.

Asakura

  • 11901 Santa Monica Blvd #111, Los Angeles, CA 90025

Asakura is a Japanese kaiseki restaurant that quietly opened near Sawtelle in February 2025. There are regular booth tables, but it’s best to sit at the intimate chef’s counter for the full experience. Craftsmanship is on full display with each dish, and patrons can choose between a six-course or eight-course omakase. If you’re a fan of sake, opt for the full pairing featuring hand-selected bottles, but if you prefer a little diversity, Asakura offers a hybrid wine and sake pairing.

Clark’s Oyster Bar Malibu

  • 23465 Civic Center Way, Malibu, CA 90265

At the end of October, Clark’s Oyster Bar made its Malibu debut at Cross Creek Ranch. This Austin, Texas original is known for its vibrant seafood, briny shellfish platters, fresh-baked sourdough bread and dirty martinis with goat cheese-stuffed olives. The pre-dressed oysters come with crispy shallots, fresh mint, minced cucumber, and a honey vinaigrette, creating a refreshing flavor profile that sets the tone for any meal. Other menu highlights include the crudo plate, pan-seared scallops, crispy rockfish with stone-ground grits and the crispiest, thinnest French fries you’ll ever find.

Berenjak

  • 1010 S Santa Fe Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90021

One of London’s most award-winning Persian restaurants landed at DTLA’s Soho Warehouse in September. This chic industrial setting fits right into the Arts District dining scene, but the comforting cuisine is what keeps guests coming back for more. Although a set menu is available for $90 per person, à la carte ordering is best suited for groups looking to share an array of kabobs, dips and sides. The house saffron rice pairs perfectly with any kind of meat or veggie, but can’t-miss dishes include the beef filet kabobs, BBQ prawn kabobs and minced lamb koobideh.

Berenjak Courtesy of Sean Hazan

Max and Helen’s

  • 127 N Larchmont Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90004

Since opening in mid-November, Max and Helen’s has become one of the hottest eateries in town. This modern diner has people waiting up to two-and-a-half hours in line just to get a glimpse of the much talked about marshmallow hot chocolate and fluffy pancakes. Breakfast favorites like the waffle, French toast and ham and cheese omelet are served all day long, but if you want to get your hands on the hearty tuna melt or pastrami reuben, you’ll have to wait until after 11 a.m. Save room for a classic malt milkshake for dessert and take your taste buds on a nostalgic journey back in time to simpler days.

Monsieur Dior by Dominique Crenn

  • 323 N Rodeo Dr, Beverly Hills, CA 90210

Rodeo Drive’s newest restaurant is none other than Monsieur Dior by Dominique Crenn—the iconic brand’s first signature restaurant outside of Paris. In true Dior fashion, the space is a design-forward oasis with a French art de vivre that was carefully curated by Peter Marino. The dishes themselves are equally as stunning as they are delicious, with highlights ranging from a black truffle agnolotti to a rich caviar service that appears like a piece of houndstooth fabric.

Monsieur Dior Courtesy of Jonathan Taylor

Henrietta

  • 343 Glendale Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90026

Cafe and market by day, cozy restaurant by night, Henrietta is Echo Park’s newest neighborhood hotspot. The quality of ingredients shine across the lunchtime sandwiches and more elegant dinner dishes, but it’s the restaurant’s warm ambiance and welcoming energy that leaves a lasting impression. In the evening, sit down for a glass of chilled red alongside a Clark Street baguette with butter, ricotta dumplings, bluefin tuna crudo and a short rib rigatoni topped with a generous amount of Pecorino.

Henrietta Courtesy of Danielle Adams

Saijo

  • 12473 Washington Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90066

Saijo is a sleek hand roll bar that makes for an interactive dining experience on the outskirts of Culver City. Order a cold sake while hand-marking your menu, choosing between an array of hand rolls, sashimi and kushiyaki skewers. There are a few Taste of Saijo menus that offer prix fixe sets, but we recommend ordering à la carte for a customizable meal. Can’t-miss hand rolls include the bay scallop and bluefin toro-taku, but it’s always worth asking about the daily specials.

Saijo Jinya Holdings

Matū Kai

  • 11777 San Vicente Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90049

Matū Kai opened in Brentwood in the beginning of April, bringing its signature Philly cheesesteaks and premium cuts with it. Though there is some crossover from its original sister restaurant in Beverly Hills, Matū Kai serves several exclusive dishes that showcase the craftsmanship of 100 percent grass-fed Wagyu. Order a bottle of Flowers Pinot Noir for the table while snacking on the tenderloin carpaccio, spiced tahini Caesar and shrimp cocktail as an appetizer. Opt for the center-cut picanha as your main, alongside the creamiest pommes purée and wood-fired lobster tails.

Beethoven Market

  • 12904 Palms Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90066

Beethoven Market is one of the most difficult reservations to score on the Westside. Expect to see the bright and airy space packed to the brim on weekends for both brunch and dinner. The cocktails are fresh and fun, featuring libations like an olive oil-infused vesper and an herbaceous thyme-infused spritz. The Mediterranean-meets-California food menu is nicely balanced between light starters, pastas, pizzas and protein-forward mains. Depending on how many people you’re dining with, consider ordering one to two dishes from each section to get a well-rounded idea of what Beethoven Market is all about.

Electric Bleu

  • 3523 S Centinela Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90066

Mar Vista’s coolest French restaurant comes in the form of Electric Bleu—a California-influenced bistro helmed by chef Craig Hopson. Balanced between classic and modern, the dinner menu is expected to change with the seasons, though certain staples like dauphine potatoes, chicken liver mousse and steak au poivre should remain. The space is simple yet inviting, giving Mar Vista locals a laid-back eatery for a post-work glass of wine alongside fresh oysters and crispy French fries coated in a savory chicken salt.

California’s Top Hotel Openings of 2025 https://observer.com/list/california-best-hotel-openings-2025/ Tue, 30 Dec 2025 15:00:00 +0000 https://observer.com/?post_type=listicle&p=1605413 As we bid adieu to 2025, let’s take a moment to recognize some of California’s most significant strides in hospitality. From the Golden State’s largest new build of all time to boutique properties that prove less is sometimes more, this year welcomed several new openings that are transforming travel for locals and visitors alike.

In addition to brand-new accommodations, a handful of timeless California properties also managed to complete multimillion-dollar renovations to keep up with the times. Laguna Beach’s Surf & Sand updated all 165 guestrooms, the oceanside pool deck, spa and restaurant, while Santa Barbara’s Ritz-Carlton Bacara celebrated its 25th anniversary with a property-wide transformation. This year also marked the completion of the Hotel del Coronado’s six-year, $550 million restoration project, preserving the hotel’s rich history for generations to come.

While we’ll always appreciate the iconic accommodations of California’s past, we’ve also got a lot of exciting hotels on the horizon (just wait for 2026). The Most Noteworthy L.A. Bar Openings of 2025 https://observer.com/list/los-angeles-best-bar-openings-2025/ Fri, 26 Dec 2025 16:30:00 +0000 https://observer.com/?post_type=listicle&p=1605333 If 2025 proved anything for L.A.’s hospitality scene, it’s that a hip bar can always attract a crowd. Los Angeles nightlife has been struggling to regain its footing since the Covid-19 pandemic, and though traditional clubs might be a thing of Hollywood’s storied past, craft cocktail bars are still all the craze.

Although old-school dive bars certainly serve an important purpose in the local drinking culture, swanky speakeasies, elegant lounges and neighborhood wine bars seem to be the most successful in getting Angelenos out of their house. In 2025, we saw exciting bar openings all across the city, from Melrose Hill to Venice.

The Benjamin on Melrose opened a separate bar concept upstairs, emphasizing the art and intricacies of mixology. Max Reis of Mírate opened a margarita-focused joint in Sherman Oaks, and Bar Jubilee took over the former Rock and Reilly’s space on the Sunset Strip. Downtown L.A. also welcomed another scenic rooftop restaurant, while CDMX-inspired Café Tondo took Chinatown by storm.

Whether you’re looking to sip a refreshing spritz in an upscale speakeasy by chef Evan Funke or dance the night away during a vinyl night in Virgil Village, these are the best L.A. bar openings of 2025.

Bar Benjamin

  • 7174 Melrose Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90046

Bar Benjamin brings a taste of Old Hollywood glamour back to Melrose Avenue. Located on top of The Benjamin, this swanky watering hole boasts coffered ceilings, warm wood-panneled walls, tufted velour booths and mid-century light fixtures. If there’s a wait when you arrive, simply enjoy a tipple on the small balcony-style patio and admire the Hollywood Hills in the distance. After enjoying your complimentary welcome libation, which is typically boozy and served in a tall, slender glass, explore the extensive cocktail list and take your pick. The menu is conveniently organized by savory, rich, bright, unexpected and boozy, but you’ll also find an entire section dedicated to martinis. The mezcal-based Last Laugh is a fan favorite, made with yellow bell pepper, fermented mango, acid-adjusted pineapple and saffron. For something fresh yet spicy, opt for the Mojo Priest, or cool off with the crisp Tzatziki Martini.

Daisy Margarita Bar

  • 14633 Ventura Blvd, Sherman Oaks, CA 91403

This spring, Daisy Margarita Bar opened in Sherman Oaks, bringing an entirely new drinking experience to the Valley. Just like sister concept Mírate, the innovative cocktails are created by the talented Max Reis, who has pulled together a list of salsa-inspired sippers that traverse the imaginary bounds of mixology. The salsa verde margarita is savory and slightly spicy, while the Baja slaw packs a flavorful punch that is fresh, fruity and full of umami undertones. Beat the Valley heat with the frozen guacamole marg, or keep things classic with a timeless Cadillac. Though you’ll come for the drinks, don’t be shy when it comes to the food. The crudo section features highlights like scallop aguachile and vibrant fish ceviche.

Bar Jubilee

  • 8911 Sunset Blvd, West Hollywood, CA 90069

Complex cocktails meet an upbeat circus-inspired setting at Bar Jubilee. Created by the dynamic team behind Weho’s Blue Collar, Bar Jubilee has breathed new life into the former Rock and Reilly’s location. The two-story space is ultra-roomy, featuring a lengthy bar that sits opposite a cozy, booth-lined main room. The best place to hang, however, is upstairs at the pool table. On Wednesdays, enjoy smooth jazz tunes from live performers while sipping on the signature Orville Old Fashioned, crafted with house-made popcorn syrup. Each drink is intricate and thoughtful, and though a few staples will endure the test of time, expect the beverage menu to rotate seasonally.

Bar Avoja

  • 1545 Wilcox Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90028

Tucked away behind a heavy curtain at the back of chef Evan Funke’s Mother Wolf, Bar Avoja is the ultimate aperitivo spot in Hollywood. Low-lying red couches encourage you to kick back and relax, while dim lighting, jewel-adorned chandeliers, romantic wallpaper and a wall of liquor lockers create a speakeasy-like ambiance. Drinks range from light and refreshing spritzes to complex and spirit-forward cocktails. The Anacapri is a delicate spritz inspired by the Amalfi Coast, made with limoncello, gin, thyme, butterfly pea flower and Champagne. For something strong yet smooth, order the vodka and gin-based Duchessa.

Forces of Nature

  • 1031 Abbot Kinney Blvd, Venice, CA 90291

Forces of Nature is a women-owned wine bar located above Only the Wild Ones in Venice. Shortly after opening in June, this artsy speakeasy became a staple for in-the-know Westsiders, blending the esoteric and whimsical side of life with a love for regenerative wine and agriculture. Glowing candles, hanging greenery and fresh florals yield a warm space where all are welcome to gather over female-made vino, adaptogenic cocktails and plenty of non-alcoholic options.

Café Tondo

  • 1135 N Alameda St, Los Angeles, CA 90012

Coffee shop and chic cafe by day, Mexico City-inspired bar by night, Café Tondo has taken Chinatown by storm. In the evening, a red glow radiates from the bar, attracting a huge crowd willing to wait in line for rotating wines, crisp cervezas and simple spritzers. Inside, white brick walls are adorned with handmade Mexican pottery, while low-lying booths and stools surround small candlelit tables. Though most patrons come to mix, mingle and sip, you can also order tasty bites like kanpachi crudo, guacamole, pork belly tacos and esquites.

Cafe Tondo Cafe Tondo

Bar 109

  • 641 N Western Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90004

Bar 109 is a moody wine and cocktail bar that serves elevated bites and elegant libations in the heart of Melrose Hill. If you’re looking for a centrally-located date night spot, Bar 109 checks all the boxes—dim lit, stylish and sultry. The Sanshito is a daiquiri-style drink that is both tart and tropical, while the delicate Marine Layer brings subtle umami undertones to a crisp, gin-based cocktail. Can’t-miss bites include the thick-cut burger, smoked salmon dip and jumbo shrimp cocktail.

Real Charmer

  • 864 Virgil Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90029

Looking for a “locals only” vibe in Virgil Village? Head to Real Charmer. Red hues, retro accents and a classic checkered floor set the scene, but it’s the cocktails that steal the show. From a secret tiki menu that transports you to a tropical oasis to a rice-washed Negroni with an uber-silky texture, the drinks are unique yet approachable, promising something for every palate. From live DJs to vinyl nights, Real Charmer is constantly hosting fun events and gatherings, making this the perfect place to let loose and see where the night takes you.

West Hollywood’s Kimpton La Peer Hotel has transformed its lobby bar into an outdoor oasis complete with firepits, comfy, low-lying couches and one of the area’s best espresso martinis. Rather than tequila or vodka, the No Rose rendition is made with rum, highlighting a bright background to the smooth espresso and foamy top. Round out your experience with shareable bites, such as halloumi skewers and crispy onion rings, before hitting the dance floor with a rotating list of DJs, which spin Thursday through Saturday.

Florentín Rooftop Bar

  • 617 S Spring St 8th floor, Los Angeles, CA 90014

Downtown Los Angeles is at the heart of L.A.’s premier rooftop bar scene, and this year, Florentín joined the mix and quickly rose to the occasion. This Mediterranean hides in plain sight inside an old-world-style early 20th-century building on Spring Street. Though the space is primarily outdoors, the main bar is inside, boasting an arched, dark green background with a complementary marble bar top. The signature cocktails lean fruity, but they avoid being too sweet. The carrot margarita is savory and earthy, but the bar’s most unique beverage is the mango sticky rice milk punch. If you get hungry, order a hand-tossed pizza or Mediterranean dip trio.

L.A.’s Best December Restaurant Openings https://observer.com/list/los-angeles-best-restaurant-openings-december-2025/ Thu, 11 Dec 2025 16:28:39 +0000 https://observer.com/?post_type=listicle&p=1605141 As we close out the final chapter of 2025, the Los Angeles dining scene is squeezing in just a few more last-minute openings. Before diving into the brand-new eateries getting ready to grace our streets, let’s revisit some of the new restaurants of November.

On Saturday, November 29, following months of pushback and delays, Holy Basil made its long-awaited debut in Santa Monica. Phil Rosenthal and chef Nancy Silverton’s Max and Helen’s also opened, with hordes of locals willing to wait more than two hours in line each day. Paradise Dynasty landed at the Americana, bringing its famous multicolored xiao long bao to Glendale, while The Mulberry introduced moody Korean bistro vibes to Sawtelle.

This month, Last Word Hospitality launched its newest concept, Hermon’s, and Los Feliz got a hip new cocktail bar called Vandell. There are also a few expansions happening, with Tex-Mex favorite HomeState launching a new location in Santa Monica, and Robata Jinya bringing its comforting Japanese fare to Hollywood. Whether you’re looking to enjoy an ice-cold martini near Highland Park or indulge in classic French fare on West 3rd, these are the best December restaurant openings in L.A.

Hermon’s

  • 5800 Monterey Rd, Los Angeles, CA 90042

Named after the northeast L.A. neighborhood that it’s located in, Hermon’s is the latest restaurant from Last Word Hospitality. Antique accents complement the shiny wood floors, creating a cool ambiance that takes inspiration from both the past and present. The ice-cold martinis are served in freezer-stored glasses, but if you’re not looking to commit to the entire cocktail, get your fix with the adorable tiny ‘tini. The scallop crudo is bright and refreshing, but if you’re only going to get one appetizer, let it be the loaded potato fritters. These pavé-style potato squares are covered with a fluffy cream cheese cloud, along with another layer of freshly shaved parm. When it comes to mains, the signature two-sheet vongole is a light, lasagna-like dish, but Hermon’s best entrée is its fondue-topped burger. After finishing with the skillet cookie for dessert, you’ll already be planning your next visit.

Régalade

  • 8136 W 3rd St, Los Angeles, CA 90048

Parisian-inspired bistro Régalade landed in Beverly Grove on December 10. The charming space offers classic cafe energy, and with chef James LaLonde in the kitchen, guests can expect traditional French bites ranging from escargot to beef tartare. Some unexpected highlights include the grilled Monterey squid, lavender honey brie fondue and poached leek salad. Régalade will also serve four different renditions of mussels, raw seafood platters, a classic roasted half chicken and in true French bistro fashion, a signature burger served on a soft ciabatta bun.

Regalade Regalade

Vandell

  • 1966 Hillhurst Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90027

Despite just opening on December 5, Vandell is already set to be Los Feliz’s coolest new cocktail bar. The swanky space exudes an old-school charm, with timeless wood-paneled walls, retro sconces, glowing tea lights and sidecar-style martinis. Created by Shawn Lickliter and Vay Su, Vandell goes the extra mile in mixology to craft creative drinks made with finesse. Think a gin martini infused with a house-made tarragon vinegar, along with a smoked tomato sipper made with mezcal. Whether you like savory beverages, boozy beverages or everything in between, one of the 27 signature cocktails is bound to capture your attention. Though it is, first and foremost, a bar, guests can enjoy bites ranging from hamachi crudo and steak frites to a juicy Australian Wagyu burger.

HomeState Santa Monica

  • 720 Wilshire Blvd Suite 101, Santa Monica, CA 90401

On December 16, Westsiders will officially have easy access to HomeState’s famous breakfast tacos. This casual eatery is a popular grab-and-go option, but you’re welcome to grab a table and kick back with a Modelo or a margarita. All of the tacos are available with your choice of corn or flour tortillas, and though the cheesy egg breakfast tacos have taken L.A. by storm, don’t skip the brisket tacos, which are the original creation from this Tex-Mex staple. Round out your spread with a side of loaded queso and chips, and you’ve got all the fixings needed for an indulgent beachside picnic.

Robata Jinya Hollywood

  • 6529 Hollywood Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90028

Located along the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Robata Jinya’s second L.A. outpost is the perfect place for post-work izakaya and sushi. From smoky skewers grilled on the robata to handcrafted nigiri and sashimi, the industrial space uses dim lighting and zen accents to curate a laid-back atmosphere where groups are encouraged to lose track of time over shared plates and Junmai sake. The restaurant opens December 11, and expected highlights include enoki mushroom chips, salmon truffle sashimi, A5 Wagyu sliders and signature shrimp toast. Guests can also stop by for the daily happy hour (Monday through Friday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday through Sunday from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.) for bites and beverages ranging from $4 to $10.

Santa Barbara’s Best Restaurant Openings of 2025 https://observer.com/list/santa-barbara-best-restaurant-openings-2025/ Mon, 08 Dec 2025 12:45:00 +0000 https://observer.com/?post_type=listicle&p=1603455 Santa Barbara’s flourishing food and beverage scene reached new heights in 2025. Although this affluent beach town is best known for its idyllic charm, scenic mountain-meets-ocean landscape and many wine tasting rooms, its ever-growing restaurant scene has made Santa Barbara one of the best culinary destinations in California.

Last year, Silvers Omakase made waves with its refined sushi, earning a Michelin star in a matter of months. We also saw MML Hospitality bring the West Coast’s first Clark’s Oyster Bar to Montecito, and Michelin Bib Gourmand-winner chef Ramon Velazquez opened Alma Fonda Fina. This year, however, saw even more openings that are already leaving a lasting impression.

In a loss for Los Angeles, chef Dom Crisp relocated to the American Riviera to open a namesake taverna that serves Basque-inspired fare. The Ritz-Carlton Bacara opened not one, but two new restaurant concepts after completing a multimillion-dollar revamp, and one of L.A.’s best burger joints made itself at home on Chapala Street. Local restaurateurs behind places like Aperitivo and Barbareño expanded with brand-new eateries, while the highly anticipated Elwood on Goleta Beach finally opened its doors.

Whether you’re looking to enjoy a burger and martini with a harbor view or coastal California cuisine in Montecito, these are Santa Barbara’s best restaurant openings of 2025.

Dom’s Taverna

  • 30 E Victoria St, Santa Barbara, CA 93101

Helmed by chef Dom Crisp, formerly from L.A.’s The Lonely Oyster, Dom’s Taverna brings the flavors of Basque Country to Santa Barbara. Located in the heart of the city’s Arts District, this neighborhood eatery effortlessly blends upscale fare with a laid-back ambiance and attitude. Locally sourced seafood contributes to the menu’s main highlights, in dishes like the cioppino pasta, poached prawn cocktail and chilled Channel Island rock crab claws. The local catch crudo changes regularly, but if you’re in the mood for something heartier, opt for the signature double smash burger. Save room for the La Cuchara, a sweet and savory dessert featuring a scoop of Basque cheesecake topped with three grams of Osetra caviar.

Marisella

  • 8301 Hollister Ave, Santa Barbara, CA 93117

On June 26, chef Danny Grant debuted Marisella in the former Angel Oak restaurant space at The Ritz-Carlton Bacara, Santa Barbara. The interior received a top-to-bottom revamp, inspired by the colors and style of the Amalfi Coast. Red accents, a cozy fireplace and a chic marble bar create an ambient backdrop inside, but the covered terrace is the ultimate place to enjoy sweeping Pacific Ocean views at sunset. If you’re a fan of savory cocktails, explore Marisella’s creative martini section, with renditions ranging from the refreshing tomato martini to the tangy tequila-based pickle martini. Start with the ultra-creamy truffle and honey-whipped ricotta with house-made focaccia, crispy squash blossoms and bluefin tuna crudo, before enjoying a shrimp and lobster ravioli pasta course or filet mignon entrée.

Little Mountain Montecito

  • 516 San Ysidro Rd Unit A, Montecito, CA 93108

Little Mountain was Montecito’s most anticipated opening of the year. Led by chef Diego Moya, this Coastal California eatery combines globally-inspired flavors with farm-fresh produce from local purveyors. Each dish is designed so that the quality ingredients take center stage, rather than overwhelming the food with rich sauces or heavy toppings. Think gentle fermentation, live-fire cooking and citrus-based acidity. Red brick-style tiles line the floor, while an open kitchen design with copper vents and vaulted ceilings makes you feel as if you’re dining in someone’s home, rather than a restaurant. Though the menu changes regularly based on what’s in season, expect items like beef tartare, grilled fish, local uni and country sourdough with cultured butter.

Manifattura

  • 413 State St, Santa Barbara, CA 93101

Created by the same team behind Santa Barbara’s popular Aperitivo wine bar, Manifattura is a classic Italian joint with a timeless appeal. Dark wood-panneled walls, terrazzo-style tables and exposed white brick accents create a mid-century space that is sleek yet inviting. The owners—chef Brian Dodero and sommelier Andrea Girardello—have centered the menu around handmade pastas, such as ricotta dumplings in a bright pesto, a traditional tagliatelle with ragu and a savory cacio e pepe. Round out your meal with the signature Negroni, made with juniper-infused agave wine, or a refreshing Hugo Spritzer.

The Win-Dow

  • 701 Chapala St, Santa Barbara, CA 93101

One of L.A.’s best burgers has landed in Santa Barbara. The Win-Dow is a casual grab-and-go burger joint that specializes in flat-top-grilled smash patties with simple fixings and a pillowy potato bun. Whether you’re on a lunch break or picking up a comforting dinner to-go, The Win-Dow satisfies your fast-food craving with high-quality ingredients. In addition to their burgers, this cult favorite is also famous for its vibrant and cheesy kale salad, which comes with the juiciest golden raisins, paper-thin red onion and plenty of Pecorino. Enhance the salad with a piece of crispy fried chicken, then satisfy your sweet tooth with a hand-spun strawberry shake.

Lulio at The Ritz-Carlton Bacara, Santa Barbara

  • 8301 Hollister Ave, Santa Barbara, CA 93117

Lulio at The Ritz-Carlton Bacara, Santa Barbara is an upscale restaurant with ocean views and a Mediterranean-inspired menu. The chic bohemian space features an outdoor patio covered in lush palm leaves and giant agave plants, creating a green contrast with the otherwise beige furniture and decor. Sip on a crisp glass of rosé while indulging in the flavorful and intricately dressed tuna carpaccio. Big cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco tend to get all the hype, but the Golden State is crawling with tight-knit communities that go all out for the holidays.

Once December arrives, many of these quaint municipalities come alive with twinkling lights, curated markets and family-friendly activities that create an uplifting spirit all season long. You’ll also find plenty of culinary events designed to delight even the most discerning of foodies. Since most of these towns are only a couple of hours away from California’s biggest cities, they offer an easy escape for locals and visitors alike.

From Solvang’s transportive Danish village to Healdsburg’s Michelin-recognized oasis, California wine country pulls out all of the stops for the holiday season. Prefer a coastal town retreat? Carmel-by-the-Sea and Cambria are as cozy as it gets, while Nevada City’s mountainous surroundings and unique history make it a great destination for festive happenings. Whether you’re looking to partake in an annual Julefest Celebration or indulge in a seven-course Christmas feast complete with caviar and black truffles, these are the most charming small towns for a holiday retreat in California.

Coronado

Come December, San Diego’s Coronado Island becomes a hub for holiday spirit. The historic Hotel del Coronado is the heart of the city’s festive cheer, hosting a plethora of activities and events for hotel guests, locals and tourists alike. Each year, the Victorian-style icon is decorated in accordance with a new theme; for 2025, Hotel del Coronado is celebrating “A Holiday in Oz.” The main lobby Christmas tree uses golden balloons to create a “yellow brick road,” but you can also search for the seven other Wizard of Oz-themed trees scattered around the property. The Del’s beloved ice skating rink is also returning, so make sure you book your sunset slot for an unparalleled skating adventure by the sea. Most impressive, however, are the outdoor lights that outline the hotel’s entire exterior—a stunning display that can be seen when driving across the Coronado Bridge or even flying into San Diego International Airport. Other holiday highlights for the 2025 season include Nobu sushi and whiskey flights inside oceanfront whiskey barrels, s’mores in beachside igloos and nostalgic movie screenings in the sand.

Where to Stay:
Hotel del Coronado is home to six distinct “neighborhoods,” allowing guests to find the right accommodations for their preferences and style. Those seeking a more traditional setting that pays homage to the hotel’s original roots should stay in the main Victorian building, where bright and airy rooms are complemented by Victorian-era pastels and accents. Prefer a modern, beachy setting? Shore House is the newest neighborhood, featuring an ocean-view swimming pool, premium beach access and a cozy cafe exclusive to on-site guests.

The Cozy Red Wines to Gift for the Holidays https://observer.com/list/best-red-wines-cozy-to-gift-holiday-season/ Fri, 28 Nov 2025 15:45:00 +0000 https://observer.com/?post_type=listicle&p=1601442 Universally celebrated around the world, an elegant bottle of red wine is a classic gift that boasts sophistication and poise. Though there is a time and place for priceless bottles worthy of the most discerning collectors, there is also an approachable sweet spot that can be more appropriate for gift-giving.

Whether you’re looking to warm up with a complex Napa Valley cabernet or keep things balanced with a fruit-forward Santa Barbara pinot noir, California is known for producing cozy wines with bold flavor and plenty of finesse. However, if there was ever a perfect time to introduce your loved ones to lesser-known varietals and purveyors from around the world, it’s during the holiday season.

Washington state boasts an underrated wine scene, characterized by a semi-arid climate, which makes it an ideal place to grow Bordeaux-style reds with depth and structure. Rather than sticking with a classic Chianti from Italy, explore the region’s more unique Amarones, or take your taste buds on a journey to Austria with a rare bottle of Blaufränkisch. From a French blend made with zero filtration to a California cab franc with balanced acidity, these are the coziest red wines to gift this holiday season.

Côtes du Vivarais La Syrare

Made from a blend of 30 percent Grenache and 70 percent syrah, this macerated red is crafted with zero fining or filtration, yielding a raw expression that captures the complexity of Côtes du Vivarais. Delicate smoky aromas are met with notes of blackberry, violet and black pepper, complementing a full body that is ripe with velvety tannins, balanced acidity and a spiced finish. Instead, it is the introduction of herbs and florals that gives gin its distinct complexity, the most important of which is juniper. Though juniper berries are a required ingredient for the creation of gin, other botanicals can be used to mask its piney flavor, such as coriander seeds, citrus peels, orris root and cassia. From light and refreshing gimlets to bitter Negronis, gin is the base for some of mixology’s most popular cocktail recipes.

Whether you’re treating a martini-obsessed friend during the holidays or celebrating your favorite James Bond fanatic, a special bottle of gin goes great on any bar cart. This staple spirit is far more diverse than many realize, extending far beyond the bounds of a standard London dry gin.

Purveyors like Cambridge Distillery have mastered the market with one-of-a-kind releases, some priced at more than $4,000 per bottle. Actors like Woody Harrelson, Emma Watson and Ryan Reynolds have gotten involved in the industry, focusing on pure distillation and premium botanicals. From Mexican and Japanese gins to limited-edition bottles that can be sipped neat, these are the most unique gins to gift this holiday season.

Watenshi Gin by Cambridge Distillery

At first sip, the dry, medium body is met with a plush palate that delivers bright acidity and energy. Best enjoyed neat or over ice, Watenshi boasts unique hints of shiso, yuzu, sansho and juniper.

Whether you’ve got an uncle who likes to collect rare whiskeys or a friend trying to spruce up their bar cart, nothing says “celebrate” like a premium bottle of liquor.

Agave spirits like tequila and mezcal are just as diverse as they are delicious, but their subtle sweetness and smooth richness make them a consistent favorite among cocktail lovers and spirit connoisseurs. From a balanced joven to a complex añejo, tequila boasts versatility and vibrancy. Mezcal, on the other hand, is known for its signature smokiness that tends to appeal to mature palates.

While big brands like Clase Azul and Herradura have created cult-favorite bottles, smaller purveyors such as family-owned Madre Mezcal have also made a significant impression on consumers, cornering the market with design-forward labels and pure products. Those looking to impress the most discerning spirit-lovers in their life can explore limited-edition releases, some of which cost over $2,000 per bottle.

From naturally fermented and distilled tequilas to micro-batched mezcals, these are the best agave spirits to gift or put on your wish list this holiday season.

Whether you’re attending a festive dinner party or adding to a friend’s carefully curated collection, you can’t go wrong with a special sparkling wine. Crisp, effervescent and fizzy, this light-bodied beverage sets the tone for any celebration.

While popular brands like Veuve Clicquot and Korbel are readily available and easily recognized, other high-end purveyors showcase the exclusivity of this timeless tipple. If you’re looking to impress the most selective of collectors, limited releases and customized bottles are the perfect alternative to your standard bottle of brut.

The Best New L.A. Restaurant Openings of November https://observer.com/list/los-angeles-best-new-restaurants-november-2025/ Mon, 17 Nov 2025 14:45:00 +0000 https://observer.com/?post_type=listicle&p=1600114 As we venture further into fall, the Los Angeles dining scene continues to grow with friendly new faces that hope to become longstanding staples. Despite the shorter days, now is the perfect time to take advantage of the longer nights by venturing out of the house for an early evening dinner. Before diving into the new restaurants of November, let’s take a look back at a few of October’s noteworthy openings.

After several delays, Corridor 109 officially launched its 11-course seafood tasting in a permanent location behind Bar 109 in East Hollywood. Clark’s Oyster Bar also found its newest home at Malibu’s Cross Creek Ranch, while Los Feliz welcomed locally-owned Wilde’s, a charming jewel box establishment that puts a seasonal twist on British fare. In Culver City, chef Ray Garcia opened Broken Spanish Comedor, and multi-restaurant Maydan Market shook up the culinary scene in West Adams.

This month, several new establishments are preparing to leave their mark, from an all-day cafe in Echo Park all the way down to a tiki-themed bar in Hermosa Beach. Whether you want to check out Brentwood’s newest steakhouse or experience Dior’s first restaurant outside of Paris, we’ve rounded up the best L.A. restaurants opening this November.

The Wilkes

  • 148 S Barrington Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90049

Created by Dana Slatkin of Westwood’s Violet L.A., The Wilkes is a moody steakhouse located in the heart of Brentwood. Vintage decor, antique accents, a cozy fireplace and dark leather booths set the scene, creating a unique diner-meets-pub setting. Former Wally’s owner Steve Wallace helped curate the extensive wine list (nearly 200 bottles), which pairs wonderfully with standout dishes like the wedge salad, latke chicken schnitzel and fish and chips. Since steaks are the star of the show, expect prime cuts such as the Wagyu New York strip and a juicy 32-ounce ribeye with classic steakhouse sides like creamed spinach and silky mashed potatoes.

Monsieur Dior by Dominique Crenn

  • 323 N Rodeo Dr, Beverly Hills, CA 90210

Located above the Dior store on Rodeo Drive, Monsieur Dior by Dominique Crenn is the first restaurant outside of Paris for the iconic fashion house. Though the elegant eatery soft-launched lunch at the end of October, a formal dinner service began on November 12, introducing a new design-forward dining experience to Beverly Hills. Given Dominique Crenn’s three-Michelin-star status at her San Francisco restaurant, Atelier Crenn, patrons can expect sophisticated dishes inspired by Dior’s longstanding legacy. Menu highlights range from black truffle agnolotti to chef Crenn’s signature Guinea Hen Rodeo. Since the menu is on the smaller side, there’s no reason not to save room for the coconut cream tart.

Galerie on Sunset

  • 8226 Sunset Blvd, West Hollywood, CA 90046

Galerie is the Sunset Strip’s newest hotspot, having taken over the former Den space.. The lounge has been entirely revamped, and guests can choose to sit out on the checkered floor courtyard or at a stylish red leather booth in the main dining area. There is also a marble bar top that serves as a third space for patrons looking to visit casually over drinks and a few bites. The bistro-style menu pays homage to Old Hollywood with timeless dishes such as shrimp cocktail and house-made potato chips with whipped crème fraîche and caviar. Each dish is meant to be shared, so consider ordering a spread including the cucumber Caesar salad, tuna tartare lettuce cups and signature burger. For a sweet ending, enjoy an espresso martini with the vanilla Basque cheesecake.

Henrietta

  • 343 Glendale Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90026

On November 8, Echo Park welcomed all-day eatery Henrietta to the neighborhood. Inspired by the salumerias and cucinas of Rome, this deli doubles as a California bistro and market, specializing in farm-fresh produce and ethically-sourced meats. Grab a sandwich on the go during the day or sit down for a laid-back dinner with bluefin tuna crudo, ricotta dumplings and short rib rigatoni. Henrietta works with local businesses, including Clark Street Bakery, to serve fresh baguettes alongside cultured butter, chicken liver and a house-cured spicy capicola.

Tiki Kai

  • 73 Pier Ave, Hermosa Beach, CA 90254

Enjoy a taste of summer all year long when you venture down to Tiki Kai in Hermosa Beach. As the name suggests, island decor takes center stage—the front door takes the form of the mouth of a massive tiki head. You’ll also find cozy firepits, tiki torches and plenty of tribal patterns throughout the restaurants. The bar menu focuses on fruity cocktails made with rum, and the OG ‘44 Mai Tai is a must-order. If you’re dining with a group, build your own pupu platter with tuna crispy rice, crab rangoons and firecracker shrimp. The tropical ceviche is also great for sharing, as are the garlic noodles and sticky ribs.

From hearty patty melts to fluffy eggs and crispy hash browns, the menu is a blast from the past, boasting all of our breakfast favorites.

  • 8236 W 3rd St, Los Angeles, CA 90048

Fiorelli Pizza officially launched operations at the Beverly Grove on November 5. The casual, counter-ordering eatery sits behind a baby blue exterior on West 3rd Street. Since seating is composed of just three barstools facing the kitchen, Fiorelli plans to operate primarily for takeout and delivery. However, if you manage to snag a spot, you’ve earned the perfect opportunity to chat with owners Michael Fiorelli and Liz Gutierrez. Can’t-miss pizzas include the Fiorelli Classic, Pepperoni, Bianco and Fennel Sausage. In addition to pies, the restaurant will also serve small plates ranging from tinned fish and salads to fried meatballs and pastas. Beyond the main menu, guests should also take note of the seasonal dishes on the ever-changing chalkboard.
