The Best Fashion Moments From the 2026 Golden Globes Red Carpet https://observer.com/2026/01/golden-globes-red-carpet-best-dressed-celebrity-fashion-2026/ Sun, 11 Jan 2026 21:56:50 +0000 https://observer.com/?p=1609641 83rd Annual Golden Globe Awards - Arrivals

You might still be easing into 2026, but awards season is already out in full force. In a twist from the usual schedule, the calendar kicked off with the Critics’ Choice Awards, and just a week later, it’s time for arguably one of the most fun ceremonies of the season: the Golden Globe Awards.

The Golden Globes celebrate the best in the film and television industry; this year, Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another garnered the most nominations for a film with nine, closely followed by Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value, which netted eight noms. The White Lotus leads the pack with six television nods, tailed by Adolescence with five.

Tonight, the Golden Globes return to the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, with Nikki Glaser once again taking on hosting duties in a repeat from last year. The 83rd Golden Globe Awards also mark the first time that podcasts will be honored, as this year the show is introducing a Best Podcast category. So far, announced presenters include Amanda Seyfried, Ana de Armas, Ayo Edebiri, Charli xcx, Chris Pine, Colman Domingo, Connor Storrie, Dakota Fanning, Dave Franco, Diane Lane, George Clooney, Hailee Steinfeld, Hudson Williams, Jason Bateman, Jennifer Garner, Joe Keery, Judd Apatow, Julia Roberts, Justin Hartley, Kathryn Hahn, Keegan-Michael Key, Kevin Bacon, Kevin Hart, Kyra Sedgwick, Lalisa Manobal, Luke Grimes, Macaulay Culkin, Marlon Wayans, Melissa McCarthy, Mila Kunis, Miley Cyrus, Minnie Driver, Orlando Bloom, Pamela Anderson, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Queen Latifah, Regina Hall, Sean Hayes, Snoop Dogg, Wanda Sykes, Will Arnett and Zoë Kravitz.

The evening always begins with a dazzling red carpet, when A-list guests arrive in their finest fashions. The Golden Globes tend to offer a more exciting spectacle in terms of style; it’s still a black tie event, but it’s not as buttoned-up as, say, the Academy Awards, which is why it’s one of our favorite red carpets of the entire year. Take a look at all the best, most fashionable moments from the 2026 Golden Globes red carpet.

Jet Set: What to Pack for a Winter Weekend Getaway https://observer.com/list/jet-set-winter-weekend-getaway-packing/ Tue, 06 Jan 2026 12:30:00 +0000 https://observer.com/?post_type=listicle&p=1609054 Welcome to Jet Set, a recurring feature in which we highlight our favorite accessories and travel must-haves that are perfect for any kind of trip. Whether you’re already packing for your next adventure or still in the early planning stages, we’re here to help with all your jet-setting needs. Now that the holiday season is behind us, it’s time to dive right into the first official weeks of winter. For those who want to embrace the cold and not flee into the snowbird lifestyle, a winter getaway should do the trick—it’s a far better choice than simply counting down the days to summer. Whether you’re packing for a cozy mountain retreat, winter spa getaway or just a long weekend out of the city, we’ve got you covered with the fashionable capsule wardrobe of all your winter travel dreams. From a lush cashmere turtleneck and fashion-meets-function knee-high boots to a shearling tote and mixed-media down jacket, here’s what to pack for a winter weekend getaway.

Hat Attack Classic Cashmere Slouchy Beanie with Pom

A good hat is an essential part of any winter wardrobe—keeping your head and ears warm makes all the difference when exploring on the chilliest days. That said, finding a good winter hat that ensures both warmth and style isn’t as easy as it sounds; I despise when a beanie has no silhouette and sticks too tightly to my head. This slouchy Hat Attack beanie is one of my favorites—well, it was until I lost it a year or so ago, and now, it’s back at the top of my winter must-buy list.

Mackage Vanna Mixed-Media Shearling Down Women’s Jacket

Mackage’s mixed-media shearling coat proves you don’t have to sacrifice style when dressing warmly—but you do have to be willing to spend nearly $2,000 if you want this water-resistant and water-repellent down jacket. The shearling collar and trim add unexpected texture, while the leather details give a little edge. It promises you’ll stay warm even in frigid temperatures, and as cliché as the phrase might be, this one really does work day to night.

Aquatalia Nevata Boots

A knee-high boot has transitioned from a horse-girl accessory to a must-have winter weather staple. Aquatalia’s black leather version has a stacked heel and an interior zipper, but the best part might be that, like all of the brand’s shoes, these are weatherproof, so you can brave the elements without risking footwear ruination.

Citizens of Humanity Genova Low Rise Boot

A pair of cashmere-denim bootcut jeans? Well, these just might be the answer to all your winter dressing woes. Crafted from a comfortable, lightweight yet oh-so-warm cashmere-blend, these full-length jeans have a low waist and flared leg, ideal for pairing with a heeled boot and an oversized sweater.

Jenni Kayne Cashmere Jet Turtleneck

A buttery-soft cashmere sweater that’s as chic as it is warm? Sign us up, now. Jenni Kayne’s turtleneck has been at the top of my wish list for a while now, and it’s for this exact scenario—a cozy weekend away, whether it’s a city trip excursion or a relaxing mountain retreat.

MZ Wallace Medium Madison East/West Quilted Shearling Tote

No, you don’t *need* to add new luggage to your travel repertoire just to match the season, but it can’t hurt if you do, right? MZ Wallace’s brown quilted tote is as practical as it is whimsical, with shearling lining and an adjustable and removable strap.

Bombas Women’s Merino Cashmere Blend Rib Calf Sock 3-Pack

Socks are usually relegated to the last-minute throw-ins for any packing situation—you know you need them, but any will suffice in a pinch. Alas, that’s simply not so anymore, and especially during the frigid winter months—bringing the wrong socks can quickly turn your cozy cold-weather getaway into an utterly miserable experience, because no one enjoys walking around with frigid feet, no matter how gorgeous the snow might look. Bombas’ merino cashmere blend socks are comfortable, cozy and ensure you’ll stay warm and toasty.

The Best Red Carpet Looks at the 2026 Critics’ Choice Awards https://observer.com/2026/01/critics-choice-awards-red-carpet-2026-best-dressed-fashion/ Sun, 04 Jan 2026 21:50:48 +0000 https://observer.com/?p=1608068 31st Annual Critics Choice Awards - Red Carpet

A mere four days into the new year, and the first awards show of 2026 is upon us. Tonight, the Critics’ Choice Awards celebrate the best in film and television, recognizing the finest actors, directors, writers, costume designers, editors and more in the industry.

Along with the usual categories, the 31st Critics’ Choice Awards will include four new honors, for Best Variety Series, Best Sound, Best Stunt Design and Best Casting and Ensemble. Chelsea Handler is hosting the awards show for the fourth year in a row, and the ceremony will once again take place at the Barker Hangar at the Santa Monica Airport in Santa Monica, California.

It’s always an A-list guest list; this evening’s presenters include Ali Larter, Alicia Silverstone, Allison Janney, Arden Cho, Ava DuVernay, Bradley Whitford, Billy Bob Thornton, Colman Domingo, Diego Luna, Ejae, Hannah Einbinder, Jeff Goldblum, Jessica Williams, Justin Hartley, Justin Sylvester, Kaley Cuoco, Keltie Knight, Marcello Hernández, Mckenna Grace, Michelle Randolph, Noah Schnapp, Owen Cooper, Quinta Brunson, Regina Hall, Rhea Seehorn, Sebastian Maniscalco and William H. Macy.

Sinners leads the film pack with a staggering 17 nods, followed by One Battle After Another‘s still-impressive 14, while Netflix’s limited series, Adolescence, scored the most for television with six, followed by another Netflix show, Nobody Wants This, with five.

Before the awards are handed out, however, the stars will walk the red carpet in the first major fashion moment of 2026. Last year’s show brought us standout looks like Margaret Qualley in ethereal Chanel, Colman Domingo in a brown leather Hugo Boss ensemble, Cynthia Erivo in black peplum Armani Privé and Mikey Madison in vintage Giorgio Armani, so we’re just going to have to wait with bated breath to see what this season’s nominees bring to the table. Things We Loved This Month: December’s Bright Spots https://observer.com/list/things-we-loved-this-month-december-finds/ Tue, 30 Dec 2025 14:15:00 +0000 https://observer.com/?post_type=listicle&p=1604832 Did anyone else feel like December was somehow both seven months long but also a mere second? The holidays are always hectic, but this year in particular, I feel like I’ve lived about 18 lives in December’s 31 days. Perhaps it was because I started out the month traveling nearly 5,000 miles to Hawaii, spent the middle nursing a fractured toe, and ended it surrounded by several inches of snow while gobbling down holiday chocolates. No matter, the festive season was both magical and a trial in itself, and this month, I found myself largely drawn—and maybe unsurprisingly—to items that embodied all the cozy comfort I crave as the year winds down, along with a few pieces that brought some much-needed sparkle into these winter days. While many think of winter as the darkest time of year, it’s actually when the days start to get a little lighter—we winter children know that the December solstice marks the shortest day of the year, with every day afterwards getting just the slightest bit longer and taking us towards the onset of spring. Consider this list one editor’s selection of items that brought a little extra shimmer to December.

Saie Dew Blush Liquid Cream Blush in Dreamy

Personally, I don’t think it’s concealer that makes you look more alive—for me, it’s a good blush that will trick the world into thinking you got a solid eight hours. I’ve loved Saie’s Dew Blush for years, but haven’t been using it as much as of late—that is, until I tried the new (to me) “Dreamy” hue, in the berry color of all my rouge dreams.

Kona Village, A Rosewood Resort

In December, I traveled to Hawaii for the first time in over two decades. I headed to Rosewood’s Kona Village property with Aperture Cellars for Āina Reserves Weekend. For a quick glimpse of how much I loved this place, please note that I, someone who is not exactly known for athleticism or physical pursuits in daily life, woke up before sunrise every single morning to canoe and watch the sun slowly creep its way into the sky. It was perhaps the best way to close out my 2025 travel calendar—it’s hard to beat a long weekend filled with exclusive Sonoma wines (including never-before-tried estate blends) at a five-star beachfront resort on the Big Island. It was four days centered around sustainability, the local environment and how culinary and beverage can genuinely complement these concepts, in an entirely and refreshingly non-performative way. Award-winning winemaker Jesse Katz and chef Dustin Valette brought a taste of Northern California to the Hawaiian island, but with a decidedly local tilt, from the produce to the dishes. It was a genuinely magical start to the month, and while I’m very much not a specific food and wine writer, I loved the natural intersection with travel and lifestyle.

Birkenstock Boston Shearling Clogs

While these furry-lined clogs aren’t exactly a new addition to my wardrobe, I did almost forget about them until I returned home from a trip to Hawaii with a fractured toe in early December. After a 14-hour-plus journey home during which I committed the cardinal sin of travel by wearing a pair of flip-flops (the only shoes that my rapidly swelling foot would even consider fitting within), I spent the next few days attempting to elevate my newly grossly oversized foot and contemplating how to navigate the swiftly dropping temperatures in a Havaianas. And then, my favorite Birkenstocks reappeared in my life—a pair of slightly-too-large, fur-lined clogs that might not be the most fashionable thing in my wardrobe, but are perhaps the most comfortable shoe I own—and they happen to fit my swollen pinky toe.

Well Market Lightly Dipped Dark Chocolate Almonds

December ended up a bit differently than I’d expected this year, and I spent a lot of time in the car, driving to and from appointments for hours on end. I’m a big proponent of keeping a good protein bar in my bag at all times (I’ve written about my love of a GoMacro bar), but as of late, my snack of choice has been these specific dark chocolate-covered almonds from CVS that I buy more often than I’d like to admit. They’re decadent enough to be a little bit of a treat, but hey, it’s still an almond, so it’s really a health snack, right?

‘The Wars of the Roses: The Fall of the Plantagenets and the Rise of the Tudors’ by Dan Jones

To be transparent, I haven’t finished this book just yet, but I’m a bit over halfway through and very, very into it right now. I read Dan Jones’ The Plantagenets: The Warrior Kings and Queens Who Made England over the summer, switching between my Kindle and an audiobook I listened to during a very long drive to and from Cape Cod, and this book is essentially the sequel to it. It chronicles the time period from the fall of the Plantagenets to the eventual rise of the Tudors, and my history-loving heart is simply eating it up.

You can hate on Starbucks all you want, but I simply cannot turn away from my sugar cookie latte come the holiday season. Unfortunately, an $8 daily coffee is not in my current budget, so I make do with the dairy-free creamer to bring my beloved artificial cookie coffee taste to my everyday routine, and I’m not sorry! Honestly, I’m already dreading the moment that this limited-edition creamer leaves the grocery at the end of the month—I’ll be counting down the months until its return next year.

Larkmead 2022 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

I’m not a wine expert by a long shot, but I do know that I absolutely adored this 2022 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon from Calistoga vineyard Larkmead. Crafted from 82 percent cabernet sauvignon and 18 percent cabernet franc, it’s a classic Napa Valley cab—full-bodied with silky tannins, with a gentle aroma of blackberries, leather and earthiness. It’s perfect for a crisp winter evening, especially while nibbling on some olives before indulging in a really good steak.

The Puffer Jackets That Don’t Make Winter Feel Like a Chore https://observer.com/list/best-puffer-jackets-for-women/ Fri, 19 Dec 2025 11:30:08 +0000 https://observer.com/?post_type=listicle&p=1462420 Few items are as critical to a cold-weather wardrobe as the puffer jacket. It’s nothing short of a must-have during the chilliest times of year, and while the puffer coat was once largely seen as a purely sensible item of clothing that exclusively served the purpose of protecting you from Arctic-level temps, this piece of outerwear has experienced a serious fashionable resurgence. Yes, the puffer jacket’s most important function is to keep you warm and dry, but thanks to a plethora of new styles and silhouettes, it now serves its purpose on both fashionable and practical levels.

The cozy and comfy down puffer jacket offers insulation, warmth and a cozy look and feel. You can’t go wrong with a classic black cut, but there are also more unexpected options, whether you want to venture away from neutrals and try a print, opt for a cropped silhouette or go all out with a full-length style. Below, peruse all the best puffer jackets that will have you actually looking forward to bundling up this season.

Physical items are nice and all, but do you know what’s even better than a material good? A truly extraordinary experience, because at the end of the day, they already have enough trinkets around the house right now—what they don’t have is a ticket to a once-in-a-lifetime Tanzanian safari, or a detoxification retreat curated by Novak Djokovic.

These are the most unique and downright lavish experiences for the most discerning person in your life—the one who’s always yearning to try something new, whether it’s signing up for a cooking class or flying off to a private island in the middle of the Indian Ocean. For that special person, only the best will do, which is why we’ve curated a selection of the most extravagant and special experiences that go beyond that pottery class you’ve seen down the block.

A cocktail-making class for the aspiring mixologist

Sure, you could gift the amateur mixologist in your life an at-home cocktail kit, but why not get a bit more hands-on in the new year and book them a cocktail-making class at one of their favorite haunts? For those near New York City, it’s hard to beat Dante, and in 2026, the cocktail bar is introducing Accademia Dante as part of a collab with Campari, with an immersive look inside Italy’s aperitivo culture. The two-hour classes (currently with spots on January 5 and 26, as well as February 2 and 9) are taught by Dante’s head bartenders, Eloy Pacheco and Roberto Bracco, and guide guests through the stories and technique behind the Negroni and Spritzes Dante is known for, and by the time you leave, you’ll be an expert in crafting these two beverages.

A week in Africa with Four Seasons Safari and Islands

If you have a family member, partner or close pal who has been dropping not-so-subtle hints about how much they’re simply desperate to experience an African safari, then why not go on this journey together? It’s not hyperbole to say that spending time in the African bush is truly life-changing—once you’ve been lucky enough to see it for the first time, you’ll do anything to be able to return to the magic. No two safaris are alike, and what you’ll see and experience will differ depending on the country and region you travel to, but no matter where you go, it’s sure to be remarkable. And if you want to indulge in some relaxation after days of 5 a.m. game drives, add on a second leg of your trip—you’ll already be in Africa, after all, so might we suggest the Seychelles?

Admittedly, it’s usually somewhat inconvenient to get from Tanzania to the Seychelles—it can take over 24 hours when you total all the layovers and stops, especially since many of these airports are tiny air strips with specific timing availabilities. Now, though, you can make the trip as seamless as possible if you book the new Four Seasons Safari & Islands experience, and add on the Pilatus PC24 jet through the hotel collection, so you can fly directly from the Seronera Airstrip in Serengeti National Park to the Seychelles—it’s less than a four hour trip, a far cry from the former day-long venture.

There are quite a few different tour operators and lodges to choose from, but this particular Four Seasons combination is a no-brainer if you want all the logistics handled for you in advance—and don’t mind paying a premium for it. All ground transport is arranged via the hotels (in addition to the private flight). You’ll start at the Four Seasons Serengeti Lodge, in the midst of central Serengeti (every single time you get into a vehicle here is a game drive—seriously, just going to and from the airport will almost certainly include major sightings), and is a top pick if you want all the comfort and luxury of a five-star hotel, but still want an authentic trip and close proximity to the wildlife. There are a few ways to curate the trip, but this experience (starting at $65,000) is a seven-night adventure, starting with three all-inclusive nights (encompassing accommodations, food and beverage, game drives and more) at FS Serengeti, followed by two nights at the Four Seasons Mahe in the Seychelles and ending with two nights at Four Seasons Desroches. Desroches is a particularly special gem in the collection—an entirely private island; you’ll arrive on the FS airstrip and immediately wonder why White Lotus hasn’t filmed here yet. It’s composed of 70 standalone villas, all with personal pools and beach access, and you simply will not want to leave.

Inside the track with McLaren

For the Formula 1 enthusiast who hasn’t stopped talking about car racing since they started binging Drive to Survive, what better gift than an up close and personal adventure with McLaren? The British automaker knows how to craft a luxury experience, and if you want to take your pal to an actual Formula 1 race, then book them a trip with McLaren for the upcoming Monaco Grand Prix in 2026 (from $42,000). The four-night package includes a stay at a five-star property (The Fairmont, Hôtel Hermitage, Hotel de Paris or Hôtel Métropole Monte-Carlo) and A-list treatment from the moment you step off the plane. As for the actual race? You’ll watch from McLaren’s private rooftop terrace, with VIP passes and access to all competitions throughout race day.

If you’re looking for an even more hands-on experience, though, we’ve got you covered—what about actually driving a McLaren on the racetrack? Yes, you can do just that when you book the Pure: Track Barcelona trip (from $4,800) at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, in the Catalan hills. You’ll get to race under the watchful eye of McLaren’s top driver coaches and engineers, for a daredevil-worthy adventure.

A Novak Djokovic-approved detoxification retreat

Aman Resorts turned to tennis champion Novak Djokovic to craft a customized three-day detox program that aims for a total mind and body reset. The retreat is available at its properties in New York City, Utah, India, Turks and Caicos, Bangkok and Phuket, and the specifics of the program vary from hotel to hotel, tailored to the backdrop and environment. In Utah, for example, the schedule could include a salt and clay body wrap, cryo and thermal therapy, myofascial release, ASMR and yoga. In Tokyo, on the other hand, the program takes inspiration from Japanese wellness philosophies, but with a decidedly modern tilt—think liquid cleansing, sound baths, Japanese monk-led meditation and chanting, and spa treatments influenced by Japanese wellness traditions. For the friend that loves energizing crystals as much as modern medicine.

Literary tourism is on the rise, so instead of adding another book to your favorite reader’s never-ending TBR pile, gift them a bookish experience they’ll never forget. Tolkien and more. The tour also features a performance at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, a stop at Stonehenge, a look at Bath, and backdrops of film adaptations including Harry Potter and Pride and Prejudice.

A helicopter ride above it all

There’s nothing like taking in the landscape from above it all—especially when you’re on a private helicopter tour. You could treat them to a heli ride in their home base (New York City offers several) so that they get views of the cityscape that they’ve never seen before, or surprise them with an addition to the itinerary on their next big trip—it’s one of the best ways to drink in the views of Cape Town; if you’re planning a trip out west, several companies offer tours from above Montana. Or perhaps it’s more of a wine country trip—the views from above Napa and Sonoma vineyards are perfection. Just make sure the recipient isn’t scared of heights.

From a printed pareo and metallic sandals to a raffia clutch and minimalist one-piece, these are the Hawaii resort essentials we’re loving and coveting right now.

Pucci Printed Cotton-Voile Pareo

I’m of the firm belief that as long as you bring a couple of sarongs and a good white tank on any beach trip, you’re pretty much good to go on the fashion front. If you really want to up the ante, opt for one of Pucci’s iconic printed pareos, made from a lightweight cotton-voile. Tie it around your waist and wear it on the beach, style it as a cover-up dress or dress it up at night.

J. Crew Handknotted Raffia Rectangular Clutch

Don’t bother bringing anything aside from a beach tote and some form of a straw or raffia clutch, if you want a slightly dressier bag for evenings. The handle on this handknotted raffia bag gives it extra points.

Krewe Irene Sunglasses

I’m guilty of almost always throwing an extra pair (or two) of sunglasses into my bag, in addition to the shades I’m already wearing. But if you’re capable of exercising an ounce of packing self-control, keep the accessories minimal—you know you’ll end up wearing the same pair of frames every day. Krewe’s classic black cat-eye sunglasses add a touch of elevated sass to any look.

Vitamin A Jenna One Piece in White EcoLux

Always make sure to bring a good one-piece, like this flattering white number, when traveling to a tropical locale—a suit that’s chic and sleek, but also a bit more useful when partaking in any aquatic activities.

Ancient Greek Sandals Desmos

There’s no need to fill up your suitcase with an array of heeled sandals and uncomfortable shoes—instead, stick with a good pair of everyday shoes (Birkenstocks rarely fail) and a pair of dressier, yet still comfy, sandals to wear to dinner or a more elevated lunch. The metallic gold sheen of these slip-ons lends the casual shoe a subtly refined edge.

Wellness Gifts to Deliver Calm During Holiday Chaos https://observer.com/list/best-wellness-gifts-holiday-guide/ Wed, 03 Dec 2025 12:00:00 +0000 https://observer.com/?post_type=listicle&p=1603034 It’s never a bad time to treat yourself and your loved ones to a little self-care, but it’s especially appreciated during the holidays. Because let’s be honest here—the festive season is bright and merry, but along with all that (perhaps forced) jolliness, it can also be a rather stressful time of year. And that brings us back to all things wellness, because along with the seemingly endless slate of holiday parties and work deadlines, you also need to find the time to pick up a few holiday gifts. Whether you’re looking for a present for your most wellness-obsessed friend who’s always talking about sound baths, crystals and aligning their chakra, or just want to give a stressed-out pal the gift of self-care, you’re in the right place. From Tibetan singing bowls and a sunrise alarm clock to an infrared sauna blanket and a gratitude journal, these are the wellness gifts to shop this holiday season.

Check out all of Observer’s luxury gift guides for the best holiday present ideas for every person out there.

The Most Refined Luxury Gifts for the Modern Gentleman https://observer.com/list/holiday-gift-guide-ideas-for-men/ Wed, 12 Nov 2025 15:15:03 +0000 https://observer.com/?post_type=listicle&p=1456224 The holiday season is just around the corner, but don’t fret if you haven’t procured the best gift for the most special man in your life just yet. While men can be notoriously difficult to shop for— especially when it seems like he already has everything—it’s not an impossible task, so there’s no need to panic buy him yet another tie that’s just going to sit in the back of his closet, collecting dust.

Instead, treat him to a holiday gift that is neither entirely fanciful nor solely practical, but somewhere in between—a present that you know he’ll actually use, but is still a splurge-worthy, special gift that he wouldn’t buy himself. Most importantly, take his personal interests into account when scoping out presents; it’s the key to a truly great gift idea. Whether he’s into all things tech, loves to be in the kitchen, is a constant jet-setter or simply adores the finer things in life, we’ve got you covered with a carefully curated list of the best men’s gifts for the most festive time of year. From leather goods and sumptuous cashmere sweater to suede shoes and elegant cologne, here’s what to buy the most dapper and debonair man this holiday season.

Check out all of Observer’s luxury gift guides for the best holiday present ideas for every person out there.

Jet Set: Long-Haul Essentials https://observer.com/list/jet-set-best-long-haul-flight-travel-essentials/ Tue, 11 Nov 2025 13:00:00 +0000 https://observer.com/?post_type=listicle&p=1594717 Welcome to Jet Set, a recurring feature in which we highlight our favorite accessories and travel must-haves that are perfect for any kind of trip. Whether you’re already packing for your next adventure or still in the early planning stages, we’re here to help with all your jet-setting needs. Long-haul flights are a necessary evil of travel, especially if you’re the kind of adventurer who is always eager to explore far-off locales. Unfortunately, air travel seems to get more dismal by the minute, thanks to rapidly shrinking seats, diminishing amenities and a general lack of basic decency and decorum from all involved—and that’s before even taking into account the dumpster fire airport situation in the U.S. at the moment.

The unfortunate truth is that a business class ticket is the actual best way to improve an in-flight experience, but alas, some of us must accept being squished like sardines in the back of the plane. The key to surviving a long flight, whether it’s a red-eye or a seemingly endless daytime journey, is to arrive prepared with the essentials that will make your trip that much more comfortable. Yes, you should try to finagle your preferred aisle or window, but no matter where you’re seated, there are a few items that will make the hours spent above the clouds at least a little less agonizing. If you’re looking for foot hammocks and inflatable pillows, move right along—this list sticks with items that can be easily stowed in your personal bag (I recommend Calpak’s Luka Duffel) and used on any flight. And don’t forget the snacks, reading material, movie downloads and your sleeping aid of choice. From a contoured sleep mask and hydrating floral essence to a cashmere wrap and comfortable headphones, these are the long-haul must-haves we’re loving and coveting right now.

Dore & Rose Aura Sleep Mask

A sleep mask isn’t exactly a revolutionary recommendation, but it remains one of the most crucial items in any traveler’s carry-on arsenal. More specifically, a sleep mask with a contoured shape that doesn’t irritate sensitive eyes, and also manages to keep out all the light. So even if you have that seatmate who simply refuses to turn off the overhead, you’ll still get a good night’s rest—or at least a few hours without a blaring light in your eyes.

$71, shop now

Dore & Rose. Dore & Rose

Comrad Compression Socks

The amount of time I spend talking about the wonders of compression socks is getting somewhat embarrassing, but I’m not planning on stopping anytime soon. For those of us with horrible circulation and an unfortunate tendency to retain water and swell an unhinged amount, these are an utter blessing. I always keep a pair (I’m partial to these Comrads as of late) in my personal bag, and usually change into them right before boarding the flight. You’ll thank me when you don’t wake up mid-flight and fear that your foot might actually burst out of your shoes.

$34, shop now

Comrad. Comrad

Tata Harper Hydrating Floral Essence

I’m not a proponent of a full skincare routine in the sky, but I do love any product that will keep my skin from feeling like it’s going to crack mid-flight. A travel-sized essence in a spritz bottle is ideal for a little skin pick-me-up, because no, you cannot, under any circumstances, use that water in the plane bathroom. I love Tata Harper’s hydrating floral essence, to add a touch of luxury to your in-flight experience—even when you’re flying in seat 58F.

$12, shop now

Tata Harper. Tata Harper

Joanna Czech Skincare The Cleansing Wipes

I’m usually not a huge fan of a face wipe, but I make an exception on travel days, especially during any red-eye. A cleansing wipe will get rid of any extra makeup and the unfortunate bacteria and germs that are a part of travel. While you could use any face wipes, I’ve unfortunately become rather obsessed with these Joanna Czech cleansing wipes—they’re soothing, non-irritating, and also, similarly to the Tata Harper spray, add a little grandeur to the back of the plane.

$30, shop now

Joanna Czech. Joanna Czech

Mersea Travel Wrap

I always bring some kind of a scarf or wrap when embarking on a long-haul flight, because not only am I a germaphobe who internally panics whenever I take the plastic off the flight-offered blankets, but I want something to cuddle up in at all times. Mersea’s travel wrap has quickly become my go-to; the cashmere is inherently luxurious, and I love that you can wear it as a chic wrap once you get to your final destination.

$298, shop now

Master & Dynamic MW75
Active Noise-Canceling Wireless Headphones

I’m not a headphone snob in any way, shape or form, but I do recommend bringing a pair of over-ear noise-canceling headphones when you’ve got a big travel day ahead, and particularly on overnight flights. Yes, they allow you to hear whatever you’re listening to better, but the noise-canceling is the key component here. I’ve been using my old Master & Dynamics for at least six years; these are the newer model, with the expected noise-canceling, along with a very chic aluminum, tempered glass and lambskin aesthetic, Bluetooth capabilities and 32 hours of listening time. Pro tip—I also bring my trusty wired headphones, just in case you’re having any connectivity issues or your headphones die.

$599, shop now

Master & Dynamic. Master & Dynamic

Hydro Flask Water Bottle with Flex Straw Cap

A water bottle isn’t the most thrilling item on a list, but it’s no less important. I am constantly terrified of dehydration, and personally despise the sad, cap-less cup of water you’re handed when not flying in a premium cabin. I always bring a good water bottle, and it’s usually my trusty old Hydro Flask—this is another newer version, but I like the straw cap, and it’s just the right size.

$44.95, shop now

HydroFlask. HydroFlask

Laneige Lip Glowy Balm

The beauty items on this list are less about vanity, and more about comfort. A good lip balm is a nonnegotiable on a long-haul flight; that cabin air is painfully drying. You won’t find me without a tube of Aquaphor, but when I want to be a little fancier, I like Laneige’s lip balm.

Book Lover Approved: Holiday Gifts for the Bibliophile https://observer.com/list/best-gifts-for-book-lovers/ Thu, 06 Nov 2025 15:20:34 +0000 https://observer.com/?post_type=listicle&p=1597031 Finding the perfect gift for all your loved ones every holiday season can feel like an insurmountable challenge. Some people are admittedly easier to shop for than others, but the key to becoming an expert gift-giver is simply to take the giftee’s interests into account. If you’re hunting for a unique gift for the book lover in your life, then you’re in the right place. Sure, you could always go to the bookstore and buy the bookworm a new title or two, but while that’s sure to be appreciated, it’s worth remembering that the most avid reader you know might already have that favorite book of yours in their steadily growing TBR pile…or they might have skipped it on purpose.

That said, even though a physical book is perhaps the most obvious gift for the bibliophile, it’s not exactly the most creative. If you want a more unique gift for the person who always has their nose in their latest read, then we’ve got you covered. Aside from plenty of book-themed presents, we’ve also rounded up the bookish accessories that will make their reading experience that much cozier and more enjoyable, along with over-the-top gifts with a nod to their most beloved hobby. From a reader-approved cashmere sweater and bookshelf-worthy classics set to a crisp leather bookmark and delightfully indulgent clutch, these are the bookish gifts for your favorite bibliophile.

Check out all of Observer’s curated luxury gift guides for the best holiday present ideas for every person out there.

Author & Co. Author Clock

The book lover in your life appreciates tomes, but that doesn’t mean the only gift option this holiday season comes in the form of a copy of the latest bestseller. What about a clock for the bookish—one that subtly lets anyone who sees it know that this is the home of a true reader. This oak-framed clock brings the literary into the mundane; each minute changes to a passage from a different book, ranging from classic literature to more modern reads. With over 13,000 passages from more than 2,500 authors, even the biggest bookworm won’t get bored.

Blind Date With a Book

If you haven’t heard of “blind date with a book” just yet, it’s time to change that. The concept is simple: A book is wrapped in plain paper, with minimal hints as to what could be inside. But it doesn’t have to be that simple—instead, today’s market is filled with the most whimsical versions that are simply screaming to be gifted to your most bookish friend. While there are plenty of variations, you can just check out Etsy; this seller allows you to select the box theme and color, in addition to the genre. The utterly charming package includes the aforementioned book in the genre of choice, along with a library card-style reading list, annotation tabs, a highlighter, tea, socks, a coaster, stickers and a snack, all complementing the chosen theme.
